Spring is winding down and fresh Summer foods are arriving in the grocery store. I’m appreciating foods “in season” more and more each year and have been on a plank grilled fresh Salmon binge lately. Heirloom tomatoes are also starting to appear now and the grill is kicking into high gear.

Also enjoying:
Steamed or grilled asparagus
Strawberries and cherries with lightly whipped cream
Tomatoes, mozzerela & fresh chopped basil on bruschetta

What foods/recipes do you enjoy in-season this time of the year?

I enjoy melon with good Parma when melons first come around. They are not as sweet as later in the season, when I eat them on their own.

Cherry tomatoes with mint, garlic and parsley salad.
Tomato and avocado salad with aged balsamic vinegar.
Young haricots in Nicoise salad.

Goat milk, although we are pretty spoiled here with the weather and animals get to graze and eat well all year long pretty much. Lucky bastards, them and us too.

During summer I eat very little meat or cheese, except feta. The diet is mostly salads, grilled fish and siblings, all kinds of stewed vegetables. I make ratatoille almost every week.
I will be picking the first of my cherry tomatoes shortly. Then when the heirlooms and other tomatoes start ripening lots and lots of fresh mozz and basil....

Then fresh arugula and tomatoes with marinated flank steak....

Then fresh tomato sauce with herbs from the garden over chicken and some fish, and pasta.

I have already started eating squash from the garden....

Frickin' tree rats eat our butternut squash. So much so that we're giving up planting it this year. I've tried predator urine (including mine) and shooting them with a pellet gun. I won the odd battle, but they win the war. Frown

Anyway, back to topic. Fresh fava beans, asparagus and fiddleheads. Mmmmmm.

Do not feel despair, my friend. All is not lost and you are not alone. Some of us in the south have been putting up quite a fight. I, for one, have been on the path of war with these creatures since my initial campaign in winter of 2001. As my feelings harden, I realize, this may indeed turn out to be lengthiest conflict I've been in so far.
Our ranks are depleted and ammo runs short at times, but the enemy falls in great numbers as well. Two years ago I had to call in the reserves and acquired two mean fighting machines with razor sharp teeth and quick legs - Chihuahuas. We have been advancing ever since.
Without provoking the enemy's allies, animal control traitors, I can't go in details and disclose my battlefield plans and layout of mine fields, but let me just say, do not eat the nuts I leave outside in my backyard.

C'est guerre totale!

You have squirrels in Canada??
Are you sure they are not polar bears or penguins? Wink
ANYTHING fresh tastes better, but I love fresh tomatoes (I've picked a couple from my garden already), berries, melons, corn, and peppers.

I've made fresh salsa this week, and I had a caprese salad last night (tomato, mozzarella, basil, etc)

I'm watching all the little Meyer lemons on my tree grow, and can't wait until they're ready!

I almost fell out of my chair laughing so hard! Big Grin

I would love to be able to eat again. But my doctor gave me Adderall for my ADD and it seems that I don't need to eat or sleep anymore. Although when I do, even the crappiest foods taste delicious. I have noticed that I have been steering towards fruit just to deal with the cotten mouth. It's a hell of alot better than the 2 gallons of water I consume every day.

Oh my I forgot one! I agree with you that new baby potatoes with dill and butter is to die for! Fresh from the farm, nothing beats it!

Did you mean : Fresh peaches, cream corn?

'Cause if that's a combo, it's a weird one.

Again for the record. I will pass on the cream corn. I can chew my own corn thanks.

As well, I am usually enjoying freshly caught fish at this time of year, but alas I have not made it out yet Frown

Jason
Washington Rainier Cherries
White peaches

Had lunch at Seattle's Oceanaire this week. Friend and Chef Kevin Davis (from New Orleans) sent out his seasonal app "Bowl Of Cherries."

Plump cherries resting on a smattering of basil leaves, drizzed with balsamic and topped with Parmesan Reggiano shavings.

Never would have put these together, but it was sheer harmony.
One of my favorite dishes Jen makes in the summer:

Watermelon Salad
-Cubed seedless watermelon
-Sliced red onions (length wise, not round) marinated in raspberry vinaigrette (Marie’s brand – can find at Safeway)
-Fresh mint – julienne then toss with watermelon
-Toss watermelon, mint, red onion in raspberry vinaigrette
-Set on bed of fresh arugala
-Goat cheese crumbles sprinkled on top

YUM
