We'll be going to Glenmorangie in August

Their 18 is my favorite single malt, although I have two private bottlings from Provenance and Mortlach that I brought back from The Whisky Castle in Tomintoul that I've been holding onto until my appreciation of these bottlings grew. I'm about ready to open them.

Hmmm, I don't think I've ever seen this. Need to keep an eye out for it.

I'm not sure of the exact schedule for Redbreast, but believe the Cask Strength is released once or twice a year and will only be around a short time, so now is the time to look for it.

Man is this good. Will be touring Glenkinchie (outside of Edinburgh) this Sunday.

I'm so envious! I need to get back there. Where are you staying?

We're actually staying in an apartment near the city center as part of a British Airways package which worked well for us as we are travelling with our two boys. Also have a 2 BR apartment in London that is a 2 min walk from the British Museum. Got a nice rate through our son's Study Abroad program in a building where the faculty live.

Thanks. Our monopoly gets the regular Pot Still bottling frequently. I'll have to check my bottle for the importer's name and see if they can get it.

Grappa

Which one? I used to think that grappa was just packaged jet fuel until I was offered a glass of Ornellaia's wood-aged grappa one time on a visit to Italy. That made me realise that not all grappa was firewater and I began to pay attention.

Grappa is not made by the wineries that often put their name on it. Even when the raw material is provided by a specific winery, it has to be made by licensed distillers who then might ship the proceeds back to the originating winery. These distillers also sell many different kinds of grappa under their own labels. One such distiller who I have developed a liking for is Berta and you will find their grappas available in many enotecas across northern Italy.

You can also visit these distillers much as you do winemakers. A subgroup of the people I visit Italy with each year have begun refer to ourselves as The Grappa Guys because (after doing winery visits during the day) we usually end each day sipping grappa.

Altesino's Riserva is widely available and offers a great flavor profile.

Nardini Aquavite is a worthy addition to any nightcap as well.
Just opened and tried the 2 bottles I brought back from Scotland.

2016 Lagavulin 8 Years Old, 200th Anniversary Ltd Edition, 48%

This is a "limited edition" though I saw it in every whisky shop and duty free I walked into and is also available locally to me, but was $20 less through the Diageo owned distillery I bought it at. Very light in color (only the Ardbeg 10 is lighter), has the peat smoke, but in a lighter, less complex package that is still very enjoyable.

Talisker 57° North, 57% - only saw this in one of the 5 whisky shops I went into at Edinburgh and not seen here. Plenty of peat smoke, power and intensity, but without the iodine, seaweed, and band-aid notes you often get from the Islays. Really like this.

Next time we should do a tasting. I have a couple of limited bottlings I bought at The Wisky Castle in Tomintoul nine years ago and still haven't opened. One's Provenance and one's a Mortlach. I wanted to wait until I had a better appreciation of single malts before opening these.

Johnnie Walker Black, neat at the Blackhawks game last night. This tasted much better than when I've previously had it. Must be the plastic cup. Wink It was a pretty generous pour and a huge bargain compared to United Center beer prices.

Drank loads of this stuff on a recent cruise- a nice break from loads of mediocre daytime beers. Enjoyed it just fine.
This afternoon with a buddy
1964/68 BiB Old Heaven Hill
2016 Old Rip Van Winkle 10
2016 Rip Van Winkle Lot B 12
2008 Pappy Van Winkle 23
2009 Willett 8yr wax 125 proof
2012 Kavalan Vinho Barrique Solist Cask Strength
Hakushu 25
the willett was hands down my favorite. the PVW23 was excellent. the hakushu 25 had a great nose, but was too thin on the palate. at cask strength, she would have been perfect. lot b was my third favorite. the kavalan VBSCS was by far the best whiskey i have tried from them.
