Frapin V.I.P XO Cognac
Frapin Extra vieille reserve patrimoniale, Cognac
a fantastic duo, absolutely recommended
Sunday I did a Scotch tasting trying to get a feel for some of the different areas and products:
* Glenmorangie 10 Year Old Highland Single Malt Original
* Glenmorangie 12 Year Old Highland Single Malt Quinta Ruban
* Glenmorangie 12 Year Old Highland Single Malt Nectar d'Or
* Auchentoshan 12 Year Old Lowland Single Malt
* Glenlivet 12 Year Old Speyside Single Malt
* Talisker 10 Year Old Isle of Skye Single Malt
* Laphroaig 10 Year Old Islay Single Malt
Overall my favorites were the GlenMo Quinta Ruban, Auchentoshan and Laphroaig. I'd say being primarily a wine drinker my clear favorite was the GlenMo Quinta Ruban with it's 2 year port cask finish. Dangerously smooth and aromatic one could quickly find themselves in trouble drinking this Scotch. The Auchentoshan is a clean, easy to sip version of Scotch. The Laphroaig is a huge peet festival and quite unique. I felt like I was smelling a smoked brisket.

Nice! Interesting to see you prefer the Quinta Ruban to the Nectar d'Or.
Red Breast 12 year old Irish.
Even though it is single-pot, I think I still prefer a 12 year Jameson instead.

Tried Nectar d'Or first time last night. Loved it!
Has anyone had an experience with Grangestone Highland Single Malt Scotch?
I'm a cynical guy (imagine that) in large chain wine and spirit stores when it comes to really strong recommendations from an employee. I was browsing the single malts, and a salesperson at Total Wine came up and asked if I needed help. I gave the ubiquitous, "I'm just looking..." which apparently meant, "Yes, please enlighten me..." (Boy, do I sound like an a$$hole, or what?) Anyway, he was dead-set on the quality of Grangestone. They had a 12, 18 and 21 year bottling. Realitve to peers, the price point was very good. I asked more, and he said the price was low because Total Wine bought the entire production. Needless to say, I buckled and bought the 18 for $60-ish. Please tell me I didn't get sold crummy Scotch.

It's a spot that doesn't need to get hit very often, but this sure hit it.

Hmm... never heard that name, could be a new distillery?
If it was a new distillery though, they wouldn't have some 18yr or 21yr stuff for sale.
There seems to be a Grain Whisky distillery called Girvan at a place called Grangestone. (former home of the Ladyburn distillery, that has been shut down long ago)
The Girvan distillery releases a Single-Malt, once in a while, but that one never was called Grangestone. (they usually call their single-malt "Black Barrel", allthough Berry Bros seems to have some independant bottlings simply called Girvan)
My best guess is: The Girvan Grain Destillery decided to launch a brand of Single-Malt Whisky, using old barrels of their Malt-Whisky, they usually mix into their Scotch blend. Not unusual. Or maybe they just delivered some of their malt casks to total-wine, who decided to sell it as "Grangestone".
That doesn't tell anything about the quality though, could be very good, could be very bad. Most of the most famous single-malt whiskys are used for scotch-blends as well. (eg Highland-Park --> Famous Grouse) Some Grain distillerys keep their single-malt for blending only, never releasing them as single-malt. So maybe your Grangestone is a truly rare occasion for tasting the single-malt of the Girvan distillery.

I just now "get" peat... took me 10 years of off n' on whisky drinking to finally crave it.

A favorite of mine
The sale ended today, so I just went out and bought another.
25 yo is exquisite...
They found a few barrels in the back of the distillery and are offering 200 bottles only, for the USA, of a 40 year old...
Price will be about $ 2700.00 per bottle.
Yup, $ 2700.00 per bottle!

I'm down in Bermuda a couple of times a year usually. I'll give it a try. I've had he regular Gosling's Dark in a Dark 'n Stormy many times.
New one just out...REBELLION BOURBON
Cedar Ridge Bourbon.
Here's a new one for you lovers of celebrity labels: Ron Jeremy Rum.
Yep, the man himself is supposed to be in Seattle tomorrow to sign bottles for "fans". If you're a gal, he might sign something else for you, I suppose.
I can hear the quotes now:
"Honey, have you tasted Ron Jeremy?"
"Had Ron Jeremy lately?"
"Pour some Ron Jeremy in a glass and enjoy!"

Ri in an Old Fashioned. Nice bit of spice and honey with this one.
After the obligatory, and wonderfully great, Woodford Reserve mint julep at a friend's Derby Party, we then ventured into a truly amazing 12 year old single barrel Buffalo Trace, on the rocks. Goodness! Kentucky does do fine bourbon, fast women, and pretty horses in unparalled ways!

Indeed. But, I'm actually growing weary of the Ardbeg lineup in general. I find much more complexity and character in other Islay malts, including Bruichladdich & Caol Ila. Springbank (Campbeltown) & Mortlach (Speyside) are some other favorites.
