Starbucks' blonde series is a good example of coffee that they offer that is not over roasted. I'll bet we see a trend towards more subtle and nuanced coffees from them as time goes on.
Their French Roast is, by their own definition; blunt.... liquid smoke. It's their darkest roast. Certainly it is smooth and reasonably light on its feet, but it's on the espresso end of the flavor spectrum. For many, it's just too burnt.
I don't think there is a correlation between the ability to appreciate fresh coffee and a preference towards lighter or darker roasts.

Good to know, but never order French roast.

Do not disagree, but some seem to think ALL of their coffee is over-roasted, which it clearly is not.

It was as smooth as a French roast.
Sorry, this portion of your post had me thinking that you had.

I am not among those who think all Starbucks' coffe is overroasted. Just that most of it is....

And I do like a dark roast from time to time. I just finished up a bag of their Sumatra this morning.

Trust me, the comment was not pointed towards you.
If it were, I would have really had a little fun.

Pulled out the French Press for the first time in a couple of years. Perhaps a little too much water or too finely ground beans. Not bad, but not really better than my drip coffee.
While dining at The Marc in Walla Walla last week, their "standard" coffee was brought in a French press pot. It was perfect. They take coffee serious in the Pacific NW. Oregon had drive-through espresso pretty much everywhere.

bill, did you have lunch at the Ice Burg? Not to be missed!
We didn't, and actually didn't see it mentioned. We kept lunches on the simple side at some downtown cafes - Green Spoon and Olives. We liked both places. Lots of caloric intake between tastings and dinners.

I should have mentioned it when I knew you were going.
Archer Farms French Roast.
My current addiction is Starbucks Pikes Place Roast.

Starbucks Gold Coast blend - pretty good, but not as interesting as the Komodo Dragon I had for my last pound of beans.
I think I'm going Peet's next time - I want to re-test to see if the extra $2-$3 per pound is worth it.

Try their Major Dickason's Blend if you like 'em duper dark, BRR. A tasty roast. For some reason, it seems super-caffeinated to me, fwiw.....

It's another one of the few I buy when I can't get the Echo Mountain coffee.
Currently I am making pods for my Senseo single cup brewer with Peerless Hawaiian blend, Starbuck's Anniversary blend, and Roger's Family San Francisco Bay Fog Chaser.
