After reading some favourable comments about Starbuck's Komodo Dragon blend, I finally bought a bag. Don't like it much-- it tastes burnt and just slightly bitter. A lot of the beans are broken; I suppose because they're so dried they chip easily just from contact with each other. Not impressed.

I love a dark rich brew, but this ain't it for me.

Sea, I'm a big fan of Starbuck's, but not their Komodo. You also had a bad bag. I have never seen broken beans, never.

I like Starbucks Komodo, despite other people's negative experiences. My favorite Starbucks, which I now can only find in Europe, is their Ethiopia Yergacheffe. This used to be my house coffee, but I can only find it in places like Brussels now.

For what it's worth, I've seen the Ethiopia Yergacheffe in the Starbucks here in NYC.

Sure. I just grind the beans and put them in a filter holder over a mug and pour boiling water over the grounds. If you go to buy some, be wary of the Blue Mountain blends.

+1 on the blends. Same with Kona.

I was wondering if Vinaigre had the beans already ground for espresso. Never would have thought to prepare this type of coffee in an espresso, is all.

I have a Jura dual hopper automatic expresso machine, I just put the beans in one of the hoppers.
I now left some in one of the hoppers, I can blend as I want with my regular beans.

If we had a thread called "Most overrated coffees", this would top the list.

Kona and Kaua'i are also "over-rated" in my view, and I can get them here easily for half the price. I much prefer African coffees.

My issue with Kona is more about over-priced, than over-rated. You could probably lump Blue Mountain in the same category, but I've never toured the area there to have a decent feel for the different coffee being grown.
I view Kona coffee kind of how I view Napa cabernet, meaning there is a high variance between the different farms and growers. The fact that everything from Kona has to cost a lot is my issue. Some is worth it IMO and others aren't anything special.

I'm drinking Stbx Guatemalan this morning.

Absolutely. My favorite of all time. It used to be fairly easy to find in the USA, but now I can't find it easily except when I'm in Europe.

Plenty of mail-order sources out there, haggis. I agree with you, one of my very favorite beans.

Expectations are low. More for the novelty than anything.

Would love to hear your impressions. The version I tried was notable only for its complete lack of acidity. Some of the group really liked that, commenting on how "smooth" it was. I guess nothing says smoothness like a gentle rubbing along the inside walls of a civet's colon.

Perhaps civet doctors refer to this procedure as a colonoscoffee.

Thanks, PH. I'll do some searching.
