I wasn't at all sober when I made this decision. I'd probably be better off just burning $1200.
My buddy is selling this for a friend that desperately needs the money. The car is a complete basket-case. I'm so mad at myself I don't even know where to start.
The plan is to get it running and "lot driving" and hopefully sell it on later in the winter to someone looking for a spring project. With any luck I can get rid of it for the same price I paid for it.

I was driving behind a high Jeep on I-95 and a truck tire piece passed between its wheels. I had no time to react but I knew my car wouldn't clear it. At 75, I swerved hard to the right then hard left to avoid it. I was expecting some fishtail ing but there was not a hint of any. It was like riding on rails. trunk? I don't put wine in the trunk unless it's between 30 and 50 degrees! Actually, I never put it in the trunk. It's one of the reasons I rent an SUV when I travel.

I haven't bought a car in 17 years - we're starting to look now. I'm kinda interested in a Subaru and am curious about the driver assist feature you can get. I'm sure lots of cars have them - I'm just wondering whether people like them or turn them off. It does collision avoidance (brakes if a car is stopped in front of you), lane drift warnings, cruise control adjustment (slows if you're in slower traffic and speeds up when it clears). Do you have this a car you own now? Do you use it or just turn it off?

collision avoidance is somethign you would never ever want to turn off.
the machine is so much faster at reaction then you'll EVER be.
the algorithm is fairly smart, ie it calculates the distance of teh car in front of you and speed you're going and knows the minimum stopping force you'd need before you will collide.
basically if the thing turns on, you've already passed the point of driver intervention and you would most likely have crashed if you stepped on the brake 1-2 seconds after recognizing.
I still have 8 1/2 months left on my 3 year lease, but I've been looking at a few cars. The most impressive I've found is the 2016 CTS-V with 640 HP. I hope they make it in a coupe for 2017. According to the latest Road @ Track, it's faster than the BMW M5 (3.5 0-60, 11.6 1/4 mile) and handles better (.98 g). From looking at both, it's way more luxurious with a Pininfarina-designed interior. I can't think of any other car I'd want.

Mixed feelings here. Agree with g-man on collision mitigation braking. No sense turning it off. If you use it once in a real-world scenario you've paid for it. Keep in mind that these systems don't guarantee you won't crash, only that the "may" mitigate a potential collision.
That said, I find most collision "warning" systems, even set to the least sensitive (farthest away) setting, tend to go off at inappropriate times. Mine goes off occasionally as I start up a grade. If I could turn it off without having a "trouble light" on the dash, I would.
Lane departure warning. Turned off in my ride. Absolute pain in the ass.
Lane keep assist. Useful, under certain circumstances. I use it occasionally.
Radar cruise control. Never ever use it. I don't use cruise control except for long trips when I need to stretch a leg for a few minutes.
Rear cross traffic monitor. Wonderful invention. Especially when backing out between two larger vehicles.
Blind spot monitors. Good stuff. I turn the sound off, but the visual prompt is helpful.

My wife got a Forrester about 15 months ago. She loves it. It has the backup camera thing, but I don't think it has the other stuff. But the ride is nice. Good luck on your search.

Thanks, that's helpful. I guess I need to figure out how configurable all this stuff is on the car I'm looking at. It all seems valuable to me, but I hate getting in a car that has some annoying thing I can't turn off.

Each of these have an on off button on the dash. Simple!! Easy!! A one year old can do it!! The default is "Off".

Factory default is "on" for every electronic safety geegaw in my car, and as I mentioned in my earlier post, when turning off some of this stuff, you get an annoying light on the dash.
