Miles Davis is my daughter's favorite jazz artist. She loves his playing with the Harmon mute. She burned me a CD of assorted Miles stuff - I get the double happiness of the music and the kind deed from my daughter.

cdr,

Take a listen to Davis' "Tutu" album. It's jazz fusion, which your daughter may not enjoy, but if I remember correctly, it's nearly 100% harmon mute, and has some great tracks.

Also, I'm sure your daughter is aware of the movie "Dingo," a decent Aussie flick that features an older Davis and a young protege from the Outback. Davis is quite out of tune on a few of the tracks, but shhhh, don't tell her that. Here's a link, and it's probably available on VHS: Clicky.

Ah, one must only smile at the naivete' of the youth. Smile

G-man, you should seek out and read the letters Mozart wrote to Leopold about Bach.

The influence of Bach on Mozart was profound and provoked much.

You now have your homework, grasshopper. Razz Wink

Well... I almost agree with g-man. I love Bach concertos. But, if by mechanical he actually means, "mathematical", I would agree. listening to them is like listening to beautiful math. To me, anyway.

Right now, The Dead.

Trying to find =) ... but while bach did influence Mozart, I'd likened to something like this.

Bach created the foundations, the basis... the Music ...

Mozart took it and made it Art.

Bach’s work was actually quite typical for its period. The art of Bach is in his counterpoint - sometimes it’s lighthearted and playful and other times it’s quite cerebral. But it’s no surprise that you find his music mathematical if you’re a Karajan fan fast forwarding through parts of Beethoven.

Listening to the prelude of Bach’s Cello Suite No 1 now and it is sublime magic.

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue (SACD)

The greatness of this continues to be proven by the sales that continue even today.

If you really love this disc, you should get the SACD - assuming you have a compatible player and a surround set up. The original recording was to a 3-track machine and the remastered surround SACD side faithfully recreates that soundstage like no disc I’ve heard of this before. And they also corrected the tape speed problem.

Cool - he had a long and varied career. I tend to like most jazz in complete sessions/recordings though - similar to classical music.

Brilliant.... his beethoven conducts are the finest i've ever heard. I love how he speeds up through the boring points I don't like either =)

Interesting. My favorite is, by far, Carlos Kleiber. His 7th is my favorite piece of stereo recorded music. I say stereo, because Toscanini did it just as well, if not even better.

Klemperer is also good.

I must admit that's where my age indeed leads to my naivete. I've not heard any recordings pre 1970s
