Bessie Smith! Now there is a name I haven't heard in a while.

Back in my youth I was quite taken with Janis Joplin and she often cited Bessie Smith as one of her strong influences. One Christmas I got a double LP of Bessie's music. I no longer have the album, but the one song I recall had a chorus where she sang about: "Me and my gin." Now that was hurtin' music.

Just finished listening to:
Claudia Acuna, "Rhythm of Life".

Now I have on:
Charles Lloyd, "Hyperion with Higgins".

Baird, thanks for starting this thread. It's the only subject on this board that I have any knowledge about. Someday I hope to be able to post a TN with some real understanding of what I'm drinking, other than "I really like it".

Not full albums. It was a mixed burn. Off the top of my head:

Ozzy: Flying high again, you can't kill rock n'roll
IM: Two Minutes to midnight, the trooper
JP: Heading out to the highway
Crue: Too young to fall in love.

I believe I woke up the neighbors and pulled into the driveway after that. Smile

I think the best song on that cd is "Pictures of Home". In my opinion "In Rock" is an underrated cd. I think percentage wise it is better than Machine Head.


I like "when a blind man cries" best. I'm not sure if it was included in the original release of the album. I remember seeing Deep Purple being interviewed about Machine Head, and before it's release they thought "Smoke on the Water" was one of the weakest tracks on the album.

If you get past the glam and the B.S and just crank it, Motley Crue had some good stuff, and a fun listen.

When he wasn't playing with his "other drumstick", Tommy Lee could play big time drums.


good and fun, yes. metal? no. i LOVE their first release, which was waaayyyy more "pop" than anything else they ever did.

and i agree, tommy was one of the better drummers out there for that era. he had personality.

Wow! Except for me not being a huge Crue fan, my picks would be a duplicate of yours. Eek

I would likely add IM's Flight of Icarus to the list.
