Joni Mitchell, Blue

whole album, straight through

Seriously? Is it that good? I'm so on the fence...you just reminded me of The Kids Are Alright.

Read Wine + Art's response. Wink

Yes, it is wonderful. It is my most listened to album of all time by a lot. Only about 3 or 4 songs jump out at you the first few times you listen, but then the whole thing becomes a symphony.

I actually wore my first copy of Blue out. Classic.

Yes, but...

The same phenomenon that happened with Clapton, Robbie Robertson, Van Morrison, Pete Townsend, The Greatful dead, and others happened with her as well. While all have great bodies of work, something about 1970 (give or take one year) produced a level of quality that was not achieved prior or again by many of the very greatest... The Who have lots of great stuff, but nothing compares to Tommy or Who's Next, Tupelo Honey (and other albums as well) contain some of Van Morrison's most brilliant songs, but they don't compare -- as albums -- to Astral Weeks or Moondance. Working Man's Dead and American Beauty were both released in 1970. Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. The Band. Blue.

Neil Young's best album, imo, Harvest, came out in 1972, but his best work is on Deja Vu (1970) ("Helpless").

Something about the very late 60's and very early 70's...

Of course, if you look at what The Beatles and The Stones were doing 1965-1969...

(Or Dylan, '63 - '67)

Please dont compare Joni Mitchell to the greats. I mean it's not warranted. Even so, you cant compare the American greats to the British greats.

Billy Bragg, Robert Plant, Arctic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs, and DJ Shadow...so far...

I had such high hopes for the Arctic Monkeys. It's like they ran out of life stories to tell on the second album. Terrible.

Highest selling debut of all time and a Mercury makes me wonder what expectations you had...oscars? A Nobel? Sophomore was great (Teddy Picker, Brianstorm, Flourescent Adolescent - great stories/lyrics), including some bsides but it wouldn't be realistic to ask them to match the success of the first two, they've slid on the third and the new one, only natural for a band so young. Legends though, now.
