 Nicely done, Bomba!

i won a couple of lots at the Toronto Symphony Orchestra charity auction. I stopped attending these in 2014 because the hammer prices were silly, so I was surprised on Thursday that many lots went for relatively reasonable prices, and some were steals. There’s also no buyers’ premium or sales tax at these charity auctions.

1 x 2000 Aldo Conterno Barolo Riserva Granbussia

1 x 1996 Aurelio Settimo Barolo Rocche

1 x 1998 Batasiolo Barolo Vigneto Corda Della Briccolina

1 x 2004 Cavallotto Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppi

1 x 1997 Marchesi di Gresy Barbaresco Martinenga Gaiun

1 x 1990 Produttori del Barbaresco Asili

3 x 1996 Isole e Olena Cepparello

1 x 1997 Isole e Olena Cepparello

The Cepparello were in one lot, and the rest were a second lot. I got the Barolo/Barbaresco for WS low, but paid CAD... so I basically paid 25% less than WS low. ($1 CAD = $0.75 USD)

Opened the 96 Silver Oak last night to test my purchase. Cork came out whole and solid. Storage was perfect. Wine was a bit thin at opening but picked up weight over a couple hours and showed very well. The other nice wines in the purchase should be great. Also opened Rutherford Hill zinfandel port. After a sip we poured it down the drain.

Vintage Keeper 500, will get a few cases out of storage..

Mine is still working perfectly for over 10 years.

I see some online reviews that state the cooling units crap out every 2-3 years.  I gather you have not had that experience.

Luckily not my situation.

My experience has been that they last 10-15 years.  One that I bought new lasted 14 years.  Another that was bought used, was 10 or more years old when I replaced the cooling unit.

That was my experience with a VK500. I will acknowledge I was not very diligent with the vacuuming of the unit and I think it's very important. They seem to be sensitive to a little dust. Oh well, now I use the cabinet as shelving in my passive cellar.

14 x 2013 Boutari Grande Riserva, not chasing points.  QPR wine.

Thanks VinC! I didn't realize it was released last weekend. I'll grab some tonight.

So I went to the Bloor/Royal York store last night to get some Boutari. Online inventory said they had 54 bottles in stock. I couldn't find it anywhere on the shelf, even with the help of two different staff members. They finally found it in the stock room.

I bought 4 bottles and paid cash, but I wasn't paying attention and didn't do the math when he rang it up. After he handed me my receipt I noticed that it was $26.05/bottle instead of $22.95. Then I noticed that the receipt listed it as the 2012 vintage instead of 2013.

He scanned the bottles again and it still came up on their system as 2012. LCBO should really stop using the same SKU for multiple vintages of a wine.

I had to go get my phone from my car and show him the wine on the LCBO app to verify the product code and price, and then he had to enter it by hand. And then refund the difference.

Between not being able to find the wine and the screw up at the cash, a simple in-and-out purchase ended up taking 45 minutes.

Agree.  I've killed two compressors off over the past 12 years.  If you install a VK500, make sure that you leave lots of room behind the unit to allow easy access to vacuum the exterior vents of the compressor.

Interesting. Missed seeing the 2012 Boutari but bought 3 2013s this past weekend at the local lcbo. I picked up more Bosconia and Commadaria St Nicolas, a dessert wine from Cyprus that’s really unique for the price.

I picked up another case of 12 of the 2013 Boutari yesterday from Burnamthorpe. They still show 32 bottles today.  Staff is helpful.  They put the case aside for me before I got there so I was in & out fast.

Christmas shopping or avid consumer?

Marked down at Costco.  Bought knowing the Dads Club at my younger son’s elementary school that I’m co-president of has a number of bourbon enthusiasts, so sharing the bounty.  Over half the bottles have already found new homes, and the rest await me meeting with folks who’ve spoken up for them.
