i can understand that this allows the wine to softly splay against the walls of the decanter and gently flow down....

But apart from splashing and creating an ungainly sight in front of a customer is it also to prevent bubbles of air whose oxygen content can spoil very old and aged wines considering they are more sensitive.

I have one myself and presume those are the reasons. Whether it actually works that way or not, I don't know.
I avoid using a funnel to decant older wines as they are designed to increase the air contact with the wine. Decanting an older wine slowly without a funnel allows for minimal air contact. Once decanted how much time is required for more oxygen to contact the wine can be determined by tasting a sample...

The wine is going to have air contact regardless. The decanting funnel splays the wine against the side of the decanter rather than dumping it into the center and creating a lot of bubbles.

But if it's for aeration because you think it will help, there's no reason not to simply dump the wine into the decanter. If you're decanting for sediment, it doesn't matter - you decant until you start seeing sediment. And if you're actually worried about losing the nuances of a fragile, old wine, don't decant at all.
