Any other Wagner fans out there? I finally saw Lohengrin last night. It was the only one of the "canonical" 10 I hadn't seen. Tannhauser was my first back in '88 I think. Lohengrin was great - far better than I expected. The leads were all excellent, with Johan Botha singing seemingly effortlessly all night.

Wagner was truly brilliant and I love much of his work. Generally speaking, I can compartmentalize my personal feelings about an artist and my reaction to his work. Wagner is the one artist for whom this is the hardest for me -- and rightfully so. Assuming I get married some day, I could not even consider playing the bridal march from Lohengrin. And I cannot believe that the Jerusalem symphony began playing his work a few years ago.

Ugh. I cannot believe I'm getting into this but... Wagner died less than 130 years ago. 1/3 of my ancestors died about 65 years ago, and there is a direct link between the two. I'm sorry, but it takes a certain level of evil for Friedrich Nietzsche to write Beyond Good and Evil and then have his next treatise titled Nietzsche Contra Wagner.

"The Jewish Problem" "The Final Solution"

The music that was played in the camps; the music that was the theme of Nazi rallies. The themes of the operas themselves where there is often a darker featured evil group and an Aryan good group.

One man can make a difference, and Wagner did. As I said, I love his work and I listen to it; but in his case, perhaps singularly, I cannot separate the man from his work.

Got it! Big Grin
Many years ago my father invited me to go with him to the Kennedy center to see one of the Wagner operas. I think it was Lohengrin. My father was a Holocaust survivor from Vienna. We thoroughly enjoyed it. He saw no connection between a composer who died before Hitler was born and the 3rd Reich.
My mother, on the other hand, would not go. (That's why I got the other ticket).
It's a personal thing, and there is no clear right and wrong, just opinions.
