I am a vegetarian and I wanted to know if there are any others of you out there? It's hard to hold a good pairing conversation with someone when they talk about steaks and cab's, when i haven't eaten any animal products for almost 2 years.

I am, but I suck at pairing food to wine. I eat what I want and drink what I want and it doesnt ever seem to bother me. That said, if I am eating something spicy its Gwertz or Reiesling time.

Life without meat isn't worth living.

I'd suggest a closed garage, a garden hose and a 1972 Buick.

Wrong....again....It's life without Cult Cabernet is not worth living...right?
Nope not wrong for the first time.

You should thank us carnivores for evolution. If it wasn't for us, we'd be just like you, slow, fat, lumbering and only smart enough to sneak up on a carrot.

I am very grateful. Thanks to all early humans for eating all the fish protien and Omega-3s so our species developed a cerebreal cortex and thus have the forsight to plant Pinot Noir in the Russian River Valley.
I've never seen a healthy looking vegetarian.....

You people are fooling yourselves. Not to mention missing out on one of life's little miracles, gravy.

Your welcome by the way. Thanks for contributing to the downfall of mankind by creating less intelligent humans that think eating only plants it normal or even smart. Cool

BTW its FORESIGHT. See, you're getting dumber already........

C'mon now, get with the program. A serious take? Puleaze! This is Carnivore vs. Livelongavore 101.

Only a moron would say MUCH MORE HEALTHIER it's a redundancy......

How smart can your girlfriend be, she's dating a vegetarian.......

See, you guys are all a bunch of dopes....

Natalie Portman, Alyssa Milano and Alicia Siverstone are vegetarians. They are healthy enough for my tastes.

I lived in Italy for six months. It taught me that you don't have to eat meat twice a day. Italian people (especially the women) are among the healthiest looking I've ever seen. I read somewhere that they are the thinnest in the civilized world.
Wow, glad to see it's the usual cacophony from the resident group of lefties.......

Alyssa Milano et al may be hot, it doesn't mean they're healthy.

BYW veg boy, a college degree doesn't necessarily equate to intelligence. Plenty of stupid college graduates in the world...

Meat is goood. Me like meat..... Killing for fooood is gooood.....

Tofu farting vegetarians smell funny......

Humans are omnivores. Take a look at your teeth, or tooth as it may be. Cool

Sorry. You've probably heard of militant vegetarians that follow people around and throw blood on fur coats, release infected lab animals, ban foie gras, and other meaningless gestures.

You just happened to run into their omnivorous opposite. Just a bad day for you I guess.....
Not all vegetarians agree with PETA tactics. I found (and still do find them) them really pompous and annoying. When I didn't eat meat, I had plenty of militant meat eaters giving me crap for something that had nothing to do with them and it got really tiresome.

I've never understood why other people have to get so upset about what others eat or don't eat. Sheesh. We're all lucky to have a choice.

Relax, have some vino. Think of GA as the Patron Saint of, well asses. Everyone gets this sort of treatment from him. Think GA like you would a Mike Tyson press conference, where he's vowing to eat your children. You want to, but you just can't look away.

How does she walk upright? 5'6" tall, 375+ pounds and such little (size 6) feet? Confused

Nevermind. I figured it out. Weebles wobble but they don't fall down...

I don't care if your vegetarian or not. Eat whatever the hell you like. I love veggies. If it wasn't for the fact that I also like meat and somehow I ended up with sharp enough teeth to rip it to shreds, I'd be a vegetarian too. But I will tell you this: If you've never had a great steak with a great Cab, you haven't had either.
Qweniden, ok, we've got it, you have hardy any vegetarian friends (insert dumb GA crackback about hidden vegetarianism and a screwy mouse).

And cdr11, you? A vegetarian? Good job. Or is this an elaborate setup?

Good morning everyone, back to the subject: I had a decent Chalone 2005 Pinot N two nights ago with a slice of vegetarian pizza. The tangy pizza sauce tasted great with the wine's cherries and tart strawberries.

By the tone and content of your post and the fact you took offense to that, I would venture to say you are not just a regular vegatarian. I'm sure PETA would agree. Big Grin

Ya got me, I am looking at my PETA card right now. But, for the record, I'm not one of "those" vegetarians, whatever that is. I eat ethically fished seafood and wear leather. Every now and then I'll have some organic turkey or chicken. My brother-in-law kills an elk each year, and I'll have a nice hunk of it with Thanksgiving dinner each year.
Why do I belong to PETA? I support their beliefs, even if I don't adhere to all of them.

Trust me, I know this as well as anyone. I lived in California most of my life, but have been in Indiana for the past several years. Out here, many of the "Hoosiers" as they call themselves, think that if you don't eat red meat (cow, lamb, horse) you're a vegetarian. I'll routinely say I'm a vegetarian, and get offered chicken and even pork in these parts. Bizarre, so I just kind of roll with it and often go with the "Hoosier" vegetarian moniker. Sorry for the confusion.

I reserve the right to have a cut of elk with my family once a year.

indybob,

Your statements confirm that you are not really a vegetarian. Since your brother-in-law hunts elk, what is your opinion of deer hunters? Also, are you aware that the acronym of PETA stands for “People Eating Tasty Animals”?
Altaholic, "BAAAAAAAAAAA!!!", "People Eating Tasty Animals," hilarious, hadn't heard that one before. see my above post

Sorry you're confused.
What's a vegetarian??? That term is foreign to me. However, I did hear once where someone said that a vegetarian is a bad hunter that is incapable of making a kill.

I think the problem stems from people not understanding or even knowing about Genesis 9:3, where God tells Noah, "Every moving thing that liveth shall be food for you". If the Creator of the world says to eat meat, He doesn't have to tell me twice. Big Grin

Seriously, since you've asked (I'm not always a smart a#%). Regarding hunting, I'd never do it, but I suppose that if you're going to eat red meat, I think that taking a gun out in the woods to shoot something that lived its entire life outdoors, with clean air and water, is nobler, and much healthier than cramming down feedlot burgers.

My hunter bro in law, my sister, and their kids, put that yearly elk in the freezer, and eat it in lieu of store bought beef over the next year (no, they don't live in a dirty trailer in the sticks).

Trust me, after being asked for the 10,000th time why you don't eat meat, it becomes a weary topic. Now my stock answer to the question is, "So I could have something to talk about at cocktail parties". That usually ends the conversation pretty quick.

BTW, if anyone here is considering being a vegetarian here, allow me to try and talk you out of it. It sucks. If I could eat meat I would. The menu limitations and social awkwardness blows.

Indybob, I am not confused. However, if those inferior midwesterners you are not forced to live amongst don't know what a vegetarian is, it is because there are people wandering around calling themselves vegetarian and then grabbing a chicken leg. See, there's the confusion.

I was a vegetarian for 14 year. I did not eat animals. I now eat animals. Pretty straightforward, no?

One small reason that I started eating meat again was that it is hard to be inconspicuous and I never wanted to stick out and be that type of vegetarian.

I must be missing something here.

You COULD eat meat. You choose not to. Then you complain about all the hardships you suffer because you don't.

Choosing whether or not to be a vegetarian is just that, a choice. Live with it without complaining, or change. The choice is yours.

If the reason is medical, I take it back.

THIII
Transitioning back to eating meat is something that must be done slowly. I learned the very hard way. I went to a dinner party thrown by some friends of friends who just moved from Sicily. There was no way I was going to be the picky American so I ate everything. I was sick as a dog the next day. From there on, I started adding meat products in small bites. I now eat it maybe once or twice a week and mostly stick to fish. The only meat I have no urge to eat is chicken but would be swayed if something looked really good.

No worries, I'm not holding the chicken leg in one hand and a tofurkey in the other. But, I see your point, well taken, but springing "ovo-lacto-pesca-tarian" on folks is a challenge, so I just eat what I want, and if it includes a couple of hunks of meat once a year at family outings, so be it. And, bummer that you're eating meat in part because you're afraid of sticking out in an omnivorious world.

About stomaching meat after a vegetarian bout. I've heard other complaints about this. In college, I'd gone full blown vegan for three years, and on a spur of the moment, had a double double (In n Out) with cheese, and was fortunate in that it went down and stayed down just fine. Cast iron stomach I guess.

Cheers,

-B
i didnt know this subject was going to be so heated, that being said...

if you think you are better than a veggie, because you eat meat, thats a perposterous way of thinking. your diet does not make you who you are. you make yuor diet.

if you are a veggie and think you are a better person than an omnivore, you are more arrogant than you know.

yes its true that our ancestors hunted animals for food and all that. but the neolithic revolution made it possible for civilizations to come about. so saying meat is the saving grace of humanity is a very generalized statement.

shut up. eat your food on your plate. you dont prove anything to anyone when you insult people in a debate. thats how people on jerry springer operate.

and if you want to contribute to this subject, pair some meat-free dishes with wines.
I just had a duck foie gras burger. I didn't have goose, so I had to work with what I have handy. I live on a golf course, so a couple months ago i caught one of the little suckers, force fed it. i didn't have a gavage, so I went down to home depot and bought a 1 1/2" platic tube, that seemed to work well. I grew up in a rural area in the midwest, so I am confused about the title of this post, but not on a farm, so I wasn't certain what to feed it... I settled on my daughter's rice cereal, since she is 9 months old nearly 30" and 25+ lbs, eating me out of house and home... I thought she is growing like a weed, this must do the trick. Low and behold the best duck fois gras burger EVER.

OK, I'll play. We had this pasta last night, and while I didn't expect the pairing to work, it was really good with a 2004 Quinta de Camarate (Portugal). The pasta dish is really good despite the misgivings I had when I saw the recipe.

Welcome to the forums OhtheHumanity. When I saw your first post, I knew you would get a warm welcome.
i am 18. i study. i dont drink alcohol in excess. and i dont have a hard time getting laid. im not your typical 18 year old.

the truth is this thread is for veggie food pairings. not for your ignorant jokes and comments aobut how much you hate vegetarians. go boost your ego someplace else... like in real life perhaps?
