I'll be heading to Tuscany for my honeymoon in a couple weeks and wondering if anyone has any input on casual wineries to hit. I know there have been several threads on this subject already, but thought I'd throw it out there anyway. So if you're about to type "do a search on 'Tuscany' and you'll get more than enough info", go ahead and save yourself the trouble... Big Grin

Obviously, since it's a honeymoon, the trip won't be wine-focused. What I'd like is maybe one or two casual wineries to swing by when we get a chance. I've never been to Europe before so I don't really know how it all works over there or how similar it will be to the wine regions in Oregon or Napa.

We'll be in Florence for a few days before heading up north of Lucca, then spending a few nights in Montalcino.

I'm a fan of chianti/brunello, but am not necessarily looking to bring a bunch of wine back. Thanks in advance...

Some quick suggestions:

I suggest dining at the Antinori restaurant in Chianti Classico outside of Florence about 1/2 hour. I don't recall the full name but it is in other threads, maybe Osteria di Passignano. They have a really nice restaurant with all Antinori wines (available by the glass).

In Montalcino, you can hit the Fortezza and casually try tons of wine. Other places you may want to visit are Poggio Antico, Costanti, Altessino, etc. I think all of these probably require an appointment.

Congrats, I am sure you will have a great trip.

Jcocktosten is correct. I would highly recommend the Osteria di Passignano. It is located beside the abbey in Badia a Passignano. The Tignanello and Solaia vineyards are just over the hill at the Fonte de Medici.

In Montalcino, I would recommend visiting Tenuta Col d'Orcia and/or Argiano which are both on the south side of Montalcino (near Banfi). Tenuta Caparzo is closer to Siena and also owns Altesino. Both are excellent wineries to visit (better with an appointment, just email them).

Hope you have a great time.
gthom,

Try to get the attention of carriedca, who spent the better part (if not all) of his honeymoon in Italian wine country this past Summer. His diary of the trip is on these boards somewhere, but at our last offline, it was his personal recollection of the trip that made me decide to go next year. I believe he said he has 1200 or so pictures that, should he be willing to share with you, may sway you to visit one winery over another.

Good luck.
