Total Wine - David Trone

Total Wine is a large chain of very large wine stores (selling beer and spirits too). They have places in Florida, Maryland, and a bunch of other places too, I think.

Anyway, the owner is a multi-millionaire named David Trone.  Mr. Trone has won the Democratic nomination for US Congress from Maryland's 6th Congressional District.  The incumbent was a Democrat who chose not to run again for Congress, so it is an open seat.

Mr. Trone may well win. The District stretches from the extreme western part of Maryland, where most everyone is a Republican but there are few people, all the way into parts of Montgomery County, where most everyone is a Democrat and there are lots of people. I think that Purple Haze and Gentlemen Farmer are in that district, but I am not sure.

One wonders this:  If David Trone wins in November, what sort of sparkling wine will he open to celebrate?

Total Wine & More has only 2 retail stores in MD none of which are in Montgomery County, Mr. Trone's county of residence.  Most of his local stores are in Northern Virginia.

Montgomery County, MD has some of the most restrictive and bizarre alcohol laws in the country.  To wit...  Distilled alcohol can only be legally purchased in county owned stores.  These stores also sell beer and wine, but it is not available chilled.  Local beer and wine stores must purchase their product from the county.  They can sell beer and wine which has been refrigerated. So, if you want a bottle of scotch and a cold six-pack, you have to go to two different stores.  Brilliant!

MD's 6th District, in which I reside, has been  accurately singled out as one of the most gerrymandered districts in the country.  The beneficiary of this embarrassment, John Delaney, is rumored to be pursuing the Democratic nomination for President in the next presidential election.  Given his lackluster performance in his recent term, he's got about as much chance as Ralph Nader.

Trone is an interesting character, with a singular pledge that he will never take one dollar from any lobby.  Ever.  Unless his Republican challenger makes the same promise, I'm probably going to pull the lever for him in November.

The other oddity is that Trone does not live in the District in which he is running, which is apparently ok.  Congressman Dulaney doesn't live there either.  Out in Western Maryland, the law was until last year that you could not purchase alcohol on Sundays at a liquor store. You still cannot order a glass of wine or a beer with your lunch until 1 PM, and  you are required to place an order for food before placing an order for alcohol.  So, you can't say "I'd like a Guinness and a Cobb salad" but you can say, "I'd like a Cobb salad and a Guinness."

Some laws are truly amazing.

And here I thought this was the 21st century.

Mr. Trone has completely funded his own campaign, spending more than $10 million of his own money.  He doesn't accept any contributions to the campaign.  His game is to reject funds from lobbying groups, PACs, etc.   That is his game.

You might call it.........  "The Game of Trone's"

Mr. Trone, the head guy of Total Wine, appears to have won the race for US Congress here in Maryland.  During the campaign he was diagnosed with and successfully treated for some sort of cancer.  I think he's healthy at this point.

Having won the election, I wonder what sort of sparkling wine Congressman-Elect Trone opened.
