1987 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie (6/16/2012)
35th Anniversary Party Cellar Tasting; 6/16/2012-6/17/2012 (Rich & Dana's): If this is an off vintage, I hope to someday taste a great one. Garnet color with a vibrant core. Opens with terrific meaty red and black currant aromas, along with white pepper and spice, and a wild, animalistic overtone. Well-balanced, with red currant, berry and black fruit flavors; also spice and roasted game too. Lengthy finish domianted by red fruit and game notes. (93 pts.)

1987 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie (6/17/2012)
35th Anniversary Party Cellar Tasting; 6/16/2012-6/17/2012 (Rich & Dana's): Notes of roasted game, black fruit, kirsch, anise and herbs. Well-balanced, showing dark fruit, plum, white pepper and spice flavors. Long finish. The first bottle to be finished tonight. (94 pts.)

1991 Penfolds Grange - Australia, South Australia (6/16/2012)
35th Anniversary Party Cellar Tasting; 6/16/2012-6/17/2012 (Rich & Dana's): Aromas of mint/eucalyptus dominate the bouquet, leaving only brief glimpses of red fruit and floral notes underneath. Dusty tannins; flavors of red fruit, currants and mint with a long finish. There is an elegance about this wine, but it is also powerful. Seems like it wants to be great, but a bit too one dimensional for me. I would hold it I think, and hope that the mint integrates a bit more and becomes less of a distraction. (93 pts.)

35th Anniversary Party Cellar Tasting; 6/16/2012-6/17/2012 (Rich & Dana's): Notes of black fruit and plum, leather and eucalyptus, the latter not as dominant as it was last night. Balanced, with nice depth to the black and red fruit, plum and herb flavors. Long finish. (93+ pts.)

Full on the attack and across the palate, with a lengthy finish. While I preferred the '99, there were others who preferred the '98. (92 pts.)

35th Anniversary Party Cellar Tasting; 6/16/2012-6/17/2012 (Rich & Dana's): Deep opaque inky crimson color with aromas of blackberry, plum, pepper and grilled meat. Nope. Nor would I care if they did (say if there were just a couple of notes, making my scores more statistically significant within CT). I don't care at all about CT average scores to be honest, but I know what you're saying.

I thought about writing one TN covering both nights. But that posed a problem in the wines that changed significantly overnight. In the end I decided that I'd rather have two notes side-by-side so that I can see very disticntly what I tasted that changed from one night to the next.

In the end, the notes are for my own use. If the CT community benefits from them as well, terrific, but that's not my concern. So I went with the format that I felt worked best for what I wanted to see.
