TN Request: Malescot 2005?

  • 2005 Château Malescot St. Exupery - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux (7/22/2009)
Dark wine, brooding nose with a pure fruit scent of cassis and blackberries and hints of licorice. A powerhouse is hiding underneath the modest and young palate, very fresh with medium acidity. Pure fruit which is hiding. Lots of definition and elegence, even at this young stage. Will be amazing when it is ready to drink. My first 2005 drabbed. Long tannic finish. 92+ (92 pts.)

Cracked one open y'day, was curious in advance of an '05 tasting I'll be attending later in the week. Open 24 hrs in bottle, left about 2/3rds from last night.

Medium red or garnet colour, no real sign of ageing yet.

Nose is really interesting. There are blackcurrants, graphite, some sweeter berry kind of liqueur notes and then a darker overtone hinting at bitterness but not bitter. I also get subtle underbrush almost a tea note.

In the mouth, there is more dark berry (blackberry?) with beautiful mouth coating tannins that caress the palate. It completely fills the taste horizon, leaving a persistent back of throat sweet currant fruit finish that just goes on and on. There is an intensity to it but it is just sooo well balanced between the fruit, the tannins and the acidity. It is reminiscent of a Burgundy from a ripe concentrated year (a Gevrey), hauntingly beautiful, elegant and super long. Wow, quite a wine.

There is no hurry on this wine, it is really only just at the start of it's drinking window, and this has minimum of 15 more years ahead of it. I would give this a very high rating on sheer beauty and poise, 96 pts.
