Well I do a lot of research, and buy only what I think I'll like. When you're on a limited budget, one rarely takes big risks. Still it's tough to find a bad one. The only real bad vintage of late is 2000, and even then there are some good ones. It's more of a matter of finding the excellent ones among the good ones without breaking the bank in the process.
'99 was an overshadowed vintage, at least here. It wasn't more than a few months - we saw three vintages on our shelves, the '99 stragglers, '00 and the '01s. The '01s were gone as fast as they were shelved.
All within 6 months !
It was a crazy time, but I bought several well priced blow-out '99s on some obviously worthy recommendations. My '99's were drinking splendidly last year, Spat and Kab.
Loosen, JJ Prum, Selbach, Haag, Gunderloch......great wines, just earlier drinkers.
I have a few more, they'll go a few more years, easy.
