TN; '99 Montes Alpha "M"

Another great wine from Chile's Apalta Estate; A blend of Cabernet, Merlot and Cab Franc. A BIG flavor rush of full ripe dark fruits. Has a Smokey presence and a cocoa finish that doesn't quit. Great now but this one is going to be stunning in another 3 to 4 years. I don't know how this was reviewed but it is a winner.

Pinot, I loved this wine too. WS gave it 92 pts. They recently gave the 2000 93 pts.

I had this last night with steak, twice baked potato and tomato, basil, parmesan salad. Nose of currant, black cherry, brown sugar and minerals. I got more a combination of red and dark fruits than PE above with the smoke. Nice wine but was hoping for a bit more. 90-91

If you get the Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon, try the '02 vintage as most of the juice that was supposed to go into the 'M' was not up to their expectations and was declassified and put in the Alpha. Granted, not a strong vintage but at least you'll have an idea of the style of the 'M' and at a much lower price.

I'm sipping a '03 Montes Alpha tonight and after also have tried the '02 - I'd skip the '02 even if it got some "M" juice as the '03 is some damn good juice

I agree that the '03 is better than the '02 but the '02 is in that more rustic (for lack of a better term) style of the 'M'. The '02 will probably age better and will improve in the next 2-4 years but I would still choose the '03 given a choice.

I found this (I think it was this one

) at Waitrose (in case anyone in the UK is interested), but at 35 pounds I passed, and tried the 96 Lehmann Stonewell instead for 30 pounds.

If I'd won the 77 million pound Eurolottery the previous week, I'd have been all over this though.....
