Opened up one bottle of each vintage last night at dinner (just hamburgers and homemade fries). Neither was decanted.

I've had both wines previously, and had found the '97 to be excellent. When I had first tried the '98 back in 2001, I couldn't finish my glass. Almost undrinkable. THe only reason I loaded up on this wine was that it was made by Heidi Barrett. However, the few additional years of cellaring really did both wines a world of good. Here are my notes:

'97 Sanigiovese:98 Sangiovese. Excellent juice. Beautiful ruby red color. Nose of bing cherries and raspberries. It was thick, with the wine coating the glass with a gorgeous bright red tint. Tasted cherries, raspberries, black pepper and a large amount of oak. Finish was long - 15-20 seconds. The tannins had softened considerably by now, and the sweetness of the grapes were balanced well with light acidity. Overall, this is a smooth, easy drinking wine that doesn't require a whole lot of thinking. What you see is what you get - a simple, straightforward, fruity wine with excellent texture and length. This may sound weird, but this wine went perfectly with fries and ketchup! 91 points

98 Sangiovese. My original memories of this wine were that it was too hot and had a repugnant vegetal odor. Not so this time! I found it to have mellowed considerably over the past two years. Much 'thinner' than the 97. Color was not as bright as the 97, as it was tinged with a brownish hue. I caught a lot of cherries and raspberries in the nose, but also a fair amount of wet grass (typical for this year?). The hotness has subsided considerably, and that's what changed my opinion about this wine. Replacing the heat was light tannin, which I found a really the 98 to be a little on the 'watery' side. 86 points.

It was really interesting being able to try two vintages of the same wine side by side, and compare them to my memories of the same wines from a few years ago.

1997 Showket Vineyards Sangiovese - USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville (3/26/2007)

Scubarex brought this to Zepplans house for a 6 course dinner on Saturday. This wine was served with the 3rd course which was a roasted portabella mushroom cap stuffed with lump crabmeat. Nice match. This Sangiovese was holding up surprisingly well although I see no reason to hold it any longer as it is not going to improve and will start to decline soon. Notes of cherry and crushed grape skins with some oak on the finish. 88 points.

Interesting...I own both the '97 and '98 Showket Sangiovese and have always found the '97 to be the one showing alcohol, not the '98...with the '98 having more complexity as well as more aging potential. The '98 is the only CA sangiovese I've ever tasted that might (note, I said MIGHT) be confused for a Brunello in a blind tasting.

It's been two years since I had these, but as I recall I never found heat in the 97 but was always bothered by the alcohol in the 98. I don't think I would ever confuse these wines and a real Brunello. Diff'rent Strokes, I guess!

Festiva,

Schneider's of Capitol Hill. I was over there last week and found it and an 05 Novy Sonoma Cty Syrah for $19.99 each. Had the Novy, was OK, put the Showket in my cellar.

As you said, not expecting a Brunello-like experience, but I've had this wine before and have purchased other Showket bottlings and doubt any of these ever see a sub-$20 price tag!

I made the mistake of passing on a $79.99 1999 Ridge Monte Bello the day before we drank it with Stefania Wine last month. Called the next day to buy both of them and they were gone! Was told they routinely slash prices on bottles that are just not moving and are simply taking up shelf space. May be worth asking about next time you are over there.
