1995 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Stags Leap District -- still looks quite young in a decanter; sweet spice-cake and cassis on the nose; lots of ripe cassis, cedar, tobacco, and some unexpected flavors of saddle leather, all in excellent proportion and carried well by sufficient acidity to make this a lip-smacking pleasure to drink. Long, firm, fruity finish, with a few years left ahead of it. App. 91-2 pts. A bargain by today's standards (US$30 in '97), this wine makes me want to try Shafer's '95 HSS.

I opened this wine last night with some Porterhouse steaks. This wine is about as dark as a wine can get, extremely concentrated. It has a huge amount of cassis on the nose which was quite appealing. I couldn't keep my nose out of the glass even when I wasn't sipping. I saw no evidence of bricking around the edges. Ripe cassis flavors with the same touch of saddle leather that Seaquam noted above. This wine still has some life to it; I'd say can easily last another 5 years if properly stored. I'd give it 93-94 points. We'll see if Laube rates it next year for the 10-year anniversary.
