OLDER CHAMPAGNES - Domaine Wine Storage - Chicago, IL (4/11/2013)

A couple of older bottles of Champagne were open at Domaine and I had the fortune of giving them a try. A real treat.
  • 1952 Pol Roger Champagne Brut Vintage - France, Champagne
A really fascinating bottle of champagne. It had aromas of hazelnut, almonds, pear, and apple. A touch sherry, but still plenty of chardonnay character. The body of the wine was lively and fresh. Nice pear and almond notes, some truffle and herb. Acidity was still clinging on too...but certainly on the downslope. Loved this wine. (93 pts.)
  • 1959 Pol Roger Champagne Brut Vintage - France, Champagne
Hard to put this into words. The aromas were hauntingly deep with elegant lemon, earth, cream, and some hazelnut. The perfume kept evolving and shifting...one moment the nuttiness was dominant, the next it seemed like you were smelling a rich lemon custard. The palate took the aromas to the next level. Bold, complex and layered this had a little bit of everything. Lovely mousse and cream gave this a dense, regal sense while a more earthy element gave it some rusticity and charm. Above all, this had great acidity and weight. A true super star. (98 pts.)
  • NV Laurent-Perrier Champagne Grand Siècle "La Cuvée" 1966, 1969, 1970 - France, Champagne
Disgorged in 1992. This had noticeable spices on the nose and palate, with a lot of pears, apples and mousse. Palate was very elegant and remarkably fresh. Lots of fresh floral notes, cream, smokey notes and almonds. Had a lot of character and complexity...really really nice. (92 pts.)
  • 1982 Charles Heidsieck Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut - France, Champagne
Still retains much of its body, and character even at 31 years of age. Loved the firm fruit profile of pears, apples and lemon with underlying herbs, crushed stone and cream. Its acidity was in a great place and gave it that nice little kick. (92 pts.)
