2007 Domaine de la Janasse Vin de Pays de la Principauté d'Orange Terre de Bussière - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Vin de Pays de la Principauté d'Orange (9/3/2009)
I'm not sure what to think of this. Very rich dark smokey nose with some nice floral tones but I can detect a little pruney over-ripeness. It's huge in the mouth, but I feel that it's out of balance- a little too fat and not quite enough structure or depth. I also get the strangest sensation of over-ripe dark stewed fruit with a little bit of under-ripe green. I can't make sense of it, but there it is. Nothing notable on the finish, it's got a little too much syrup quality, not enough acid to hold it up. This wine almost seems like a ripasso. I really enjoyed the 07 CdR, CdP, and CdP Chaupin from these guys, but this shares very little with those. I'll revisit it tomorrow, see if it improves. (84 pts.)

Maybe you should borrow from Groucho and say something like "I've had a wonderful vin de pays. This wasn't it."

I have alot of vintages of Janasse Chaupin in my cellar. I wish they wouldn't dumpster dive.
