A friend of mine who is a chef at one of the local restaurants here threw a small gathering for some of his oenofriends - we spent quite a bit of time tasting some interesting wines blind. In any case, he threw this into the mix - served with moose sliders, mmmm - and I wanted to write about it because it was a pleasant surprise; it was perhaps one of a very small handful of Canadian reds that I've tried that were not green. Nose of sweet black raspberries, smoky blueberry, dark chocolate shavings, and cedar - very lush, inviting nose with no hint of bell pepper or any greenness. On the palate medium-bodied, focused berries and plums, well-balanced, nicely-integrated tannins, and overall structure that could hold up for another five years. Lasting finish. Great effort. 91+ points.

Neither have I, until I tried this.

Vino Me - ten "mini courses" with ten wines and about fifteen people... wine revealed after each course. I think the point was to just reflect on the wine itself and how it paired with the food, and nothing else...

Whites:
2005 La Chablisienne Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru
2006 Darting Riesling Spätlese
2006 Bodega Catena Zapata Chardonnay Mendoza Alta
2005 Beringer Chardonnay Napa Valley Private Reserve
2006 Domaine Zind Humbrecht Clos Windsbuhl Gewurztraminer

Reds:
2005 Louis Jadot Moulin-à-Vent Château des Jacques
2003 Yalumba The Signature Cabernet Sauvignon / Shiraz
2005 Shafer Napa Valley Merlot
2006 Thirty Bench Small Lot Cabernet Franc
2001 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Brune et Blonde

There was also some Port and stickies after with cheese and different terrines but not served blind and I did not have any as I split before the eve finished... The Thirty Bench was definitely the ringer, but it was quite tasty with moose sliders...
Lots of buzz about this Cab
Franc especially the price. I have tried it and no green here!

The nose is blackberry and tobacco - inviting but not "knock your socks off powerful", on the palate it delivers a wallop with black currant, tobacco, hints of black raspberry along with mocha /coffee notes on the finish … another winner in the Franc department and an extra half mark for value. Price: $12.95 - Rating: ****½ out of *****

When I added this post above I was actually refering to another Cabernet Franc. Not the Thirty Bench. I have not tried the Thirty Bench but I will seek it out this weekend on a visit to the area. I was actually refering to the CF at Vineland Estates. Sorry.
In hot years (relative to the Niagara region), some of these reds can lose the "greenness" and herby flavors. In 1998, Thirtybench made an excellent Reserve Red Bordeaux style blend, as did Vineland. IMO both of those were 90 pointers easily, and both had Cab Franc Blended in with the Merlot and Cab Sauvignon.Mostly, they are not like this. I tried them for years a while back.
Well, 2007 was such a hot year - I can see it in the year over year comparisons of my electricity consumption Smile. The 2007 Thirty Bench SL Pinot Noir is correspondingly nice. Strangely, I don't find the 2007 Benchmark Red to be as nice as the 2006, and they jacked up the price by $2 so I passed on it. The 08 Rieslings are very nice, especially the small lots. The 07 SL Cab Franc referred to by The Economist was sold out by the time I got to the winery in June - it was some kind of prize winner, I believe at Cuvee in March.
