TN: 2006 Alzinger Smaragd Loibenberg Riesling

Opened this last Saturday to go with some cabbage rolls. Wasn't sure how good a pairing it would be, but it worked pretty well.

Great nose of apple, peach, spices, and a bit of pepper. Flavors of apples, pear, and traces of oranges with a bit of spice and a nice mineral streak. On day 2 this developed a bit of creaminess but still had the mineral streak to add even another dimension. I was surprised to see this came in at 14% abv. Really a great wine with so many layers. Based on the how it was drinking on day 2, I'm not in a rush to drink my second of two bottles. A great example of why I like Rieslings from Austria, and, in fact, probably the best I've had. 93 pts

Yep, I do too. Head and shoulders above the 2005 Hirsch Gaisberg Riesling I had this summer (actually thinking of opening my other bottle of that in the next month). I also have some 2007 Alzinger Smaragd Hollerin and 2006 Nikolaihof Vom Stein Federspiel that I'm looking forward to begin opening this year.
