  • 2005 Concha y Toro Cabernet Sauvignon Marqués de Casa Concha Puente Alto - Chile, Central Valley, Maipo Valley, Puente Alto (8/22/2007)
What a nice surprise this one turned out to be! Although a bit thinner than I would have expected from such a young Cab, I really enjoyed this while watching the latest episode of Top Chef. Nice aromas of blueberries, figs, and cocoa elaborately framed by creamy vanillin oak. On the palate, textured flavors of dark cherries, currant, game, and loamy earth. Some red fruits kick in on the midpalate and carry through to the finish, which is actually a bit gravelly, but not necessarily in the negative way. Overall, I found this wine to be well balanced and certainly one that can easily be enjoyed in its youth. A steal at 16 bucks. (90 pts.)

Decanted for 90 minutes; a very soft nose of red fruit, sage, mocha, fig, oak, spice, and currants; it washed lightly across the palate, well-integrated tannins, medium-bodied; a finish that lingered gracefully for 30+ seconds. This was a pleasant surprise; balanced, elegant, and complex. I will definitely pick up more at less than $20/bottle. 91 Points
