  • 2004 Consilience Zinfandel Rhodes Vineyard - USA, California, North Coast, Redwood Valley (2/4/2007)
Touchdown! This was my Super Bowl wine and, like the Indianapolis Colts, was a clear champion. Popped and poured without decanting, this wine was ready to play, interweaving rich flavors and sensations on the palate: plum and blackberry compote, chocolate lava cake, caramel kettle popcorn, and sweet molasses. Neither syrupy nor unctuous, the weight and texture were surprisingly light and silky, with plenty of acidity to stand up to a fiesta of spicy hot buffalo wings, Louisiana-style sausages, shredded beef taquitos with salsa, and guacamole with chips. At 15.8% alcohol, there was noticeable heat on the finish, so I would recommend keeping this wine at cellar temp. But heat notwithstanding, I could not have asked for a better wine to accompany all the goodies during this exciting, though somewhat predictable, game. (93 pts.)
