2004 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Grèves Vigne de L'Enfant Jesus - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru (12/25/2007)

Bouchard has owned this monopol vineyard since 1791 when it was confiscated from the Catholic church. The 4 hectare vineyard is on a steep, sandy slope. This is one of the top sites owned by Bouchard. I purchased 10 half bottles of these recently for $8 each and decided to try one at Christmas with family. Served with a rare prime filet.

Normally this wine has a velvety style and only lightly oaked. This wine was no exception. I loved the 2002 when I had it on release. Old world style Pinot Noir. Firm tannins with notes of charcoal, berry and gritty red fruit. Loaded with character and will improve with time. Obviously still young. 92+ points.

Opened a 375ml bottle of this on Christmas with dinner of beef fillet with a hollandaise sauce. Is there a more appropriate wine for Christmas? Just as good if not better than the previous 2 bottles that I've had. Creamy well rounded fruit notes. Supple tannins and a long finish. A delight to drink. Good pairing. 93 points.

Wow, the 2004 is $82 for a 750 at the LCBO. The 2006 is $130.

About the 10th time I have had this wine. From a 375ml bottles.  Not decanted. Brickish red color. Moderately sedimented. So different than any of the other Pinot's we drank that night. Wet earth, smoky black fruit and dark chocolate notes. Gritty old world finish. 91 points.
