2003 Château Grand-Puy Ducasse - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (5/26/2009)
Decanted for two hours before formal notes.

Dark ruby in the glass. Strong nose of nondescript ripeness at first, but gives way to a typical mellow pauillac scent (blackcurrant I think). On the palate, more blackcurrant with a little bit of coffee and earthiness. Very smooth and a little bit "soft" on the nose and the palate for a pauillac. Fairly long pleasant finish. Tannins are pretty smooth with good acidity. This is almost outstanding but would like a little more "punch" on the nose and palate.

Really beautiful wine but odd in a way. Dark red in the glass with no sign of bricking, but the nose and flavors are almost entirely secondary. Only the slightest hint of ripe dark fruit, lots of cedar and earthy minerality. Very nice balance of richness and acidity with a long smooth finish.
