2001 Alois Kracher Chardonnay TBA #7 Nouvelle Vague - Austria, Burgenland, Neusiedlersee (12/2/2011)

Opened by Allred. Paired with various desserts. This was the first Kracher from the 2001 vintage that I've had and it was very fine. Of the nearly 2 dozen Krachers that I've had over the years only the 1998 and 2002 #12's were clearly superior. Golden color. Thick and rich. Candied pear notes with mango and papaya. Ultra sweet but the acidity balances it out. 94-95 points.

'Sounds right to me. 1998 and 2002 remain my two favorite vintages from Kracher at this point, not just for their #12s, but also their 10s and 11s. I've got high hopes for a '98 #13 (a Chardonnay Nouvelle Vague, like your '01 #7), which I have yet to try, but I'm hoping to remedy that this Christmas season.

I'm impressed/surprised that your bottle was still golden in color, as Kracher's sweeties amber rather quickly. I find that the greater the ripeness/sweetness, the faster they turn ('02 #12 is already well-coppered); perhaps 2001's lower ripeness is being displayed in its more slowly evolving color.

2nd time I have had this. Both from Allred who last opened this 12 years ago. Dark brown color compared to the gold that it was 12 years ago. Sweet with good acidity still. Notes of white raisins and tropical fruits. Just a little below the quality that I remember from the first bottle but still excellent. 94 points.
