2000 Marques de Caceres ReservaSpain, Rioja (2/15/07)

Vibrant crimson in color. Nose of vanilla, chocolate, tobacco, leather, and strawberries. Flavors of cherries, plums, chocolate, and black licorice with an assertive acidity that makes this a good food wine. The tannins are well integrated and help provide a moderate length finish with remaining cherry and chocolate flavors. I find that Rioja at and above the Reserva classification is often times over-oaked but that is not the case here. The store that I frequent most often has this for $14 and at that price I would buy again. 13.5% alcohol.

Lentini, The buyer at the store said that their distributor was trying to clear out the ’00 Reserva – hence, the low price. You are probably seeing later vintages of the Reserva though, if I’m not mistaken, 2000 may be the last vintage released of the Gran Reserva. Other wineries have released a 2001 Gran Reserva but I am not sure if Marques de Caceres has.
