- 2000 Kistler Chardonnay Les Noisetiers - Russian River Valley, Sonoma County, California, USA (10/28/2004)
Seared halibut cheeks dressed with a pan reduction of caramelized shallots, white wine and butter; small, halved, oven-roasted white potatoes tossed in olive oil, coarse sea salt and coarsely cracked Tellicherry pepper. This meal screamed for a rich Chardonnay to accent the sweet halibut cheeks and fluffy potatoes...
Light gold, shimmering. The nose shows toasted hazelnut and the barest hint of tangerine. On the palate this is rich, coating your mouth with lightly toasted nut oils. The creamy finish shows lemon zest and a hint of vanilla cookie. This lacks the depth and complexity of the more outstanding vineyard designated Kistler wines, yet it is richly satisfying and very enjoyable with a simple meal suited to it. Very nice. I have had the Noisetiers one prior time about 18 months ago, and at the time I was greatly disappointed in the overwhelming wood. It has settled down very nicely since. (90 pts.)
