Vino Me and I spent yesterday afternoon combing through Dicarlo's Spring Tasting extravaganza of 500+ wines. For me, one wine stood head and shoulders above all the rest and earns a strong buy recommendation:

2000 Bodegas Sierra Salinas Casa Mira

From the Yecla region of Spain. This is an old vine blend of monastrell (mourvedre), grenache, cab sauvignon, and alicante.

Dark, almost black color. Explosive nose of blueberries, aniseed, and fresh summer soil after a rainstorm. The palate puts the pedal to the metal with waves of dark fruits, yet stops short of candied. Great structure, but tannins are only perceptible in the background. Long barreling finish. A fantastic deal at $38. Drink now through 2008. 94P.

Parker rated this one 93P and aptly noted: "This fleshy, full-throttle Spanish red may not be finesse-styled, but it is substantial as well as intense." The lady pouring this one at the tasting called it "a slut of a wine".

If you like hedonistic, old vine wines, then this is definitely one to seek out.

Tasted as part of a .Hedonistic Reds blind tasting. This buzzsaw of a wine finished in second place.

An attention-grabbing nose of pine, peat moss, and over-ripe berries. On the palate, the wine tries to takes off like a pit bull on a leash. Searing tannins and acidity are matched head to head by vibrant playful cherry and eucalyptus flavors. Huge sailing finish. Not a rich or ponderous wine, but rather, an exciting, aggressive wine that demands to be noticed. 94P

Otis brought this to dinner last night at 312 Chicago with Dr.T, Scott McDonald, my wife and I. I thought this was even slightly better than the first time I had it. Similar notes but the fruit seemed jammier with a more aromatic nose. 93 points.

Otis- I'll take 1 bottle if you order any and I think Dr.T wanted some also but I am not sure how many.

I love this wine, and will continue to spread the gospel of Mira to all who like unapologetic fruit-laden (but not syrupy), flamboyant, racy, old vine wines. Big Grin

Tasted Blind - The luscious chocolate covered black cherries and plum nose is intertwined with an interesting gunpowder and stone twist. That little twist really sucked me and kept and stranglehold on my interest. Even though the wine turns slightly acidic on the finish (youth), I am impressed with how well the soft blueberry fruit and spicey oak were integrated. Great wine!

This was the 3rd time I have had this wine and the first time I tried it in a blind tasting. I rated this wine 2nd among the 19 wines which were poured blind. Some gunflint aromas on the nose. Full bodied with notes of tobacco and black pepper. Good concentration. Still going strong and there is no hurry to open my bottle. 93 points.
