OK, we all know that the 1998 Cab vintage in Napa was sub-par. In fact, it was the worst vintage since the weedy, green, tannic 1988 vintage. But that doesn't mean that a few pleasant wines couldn't be made.
The 1998 Z-D Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is a good case in point.
I had this tonight with friends, as we enjoyed a nice Chateaubriand.
Complex nose of cherry/berry, tobacco, anise, and mint. Once in the mouth (with a nice bite of filet), enticing mint-tinged cranberry came to the fore. Quite refined and elegant on the palate. This wine could easily be mistaken for a 10 to 15 year old Bordeaux from a nice vintage. It continued to please over a 4 hour period.
