1998 Château Grand-Pontet - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru (10/15/2014)

Bought this on futures for $24. Drank after dinner with a cheese course alongside a 1998 Angelus and 1989 Pape Clement. Normally a blend of 75% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Decanted back into the bottle 4 hours before drinking. Dark garnet color without any bricking. Decent amount of sediment. Notes of asphalt, charcoal, black currant and herbs. Drinking well. I have 1 more bottle which I'll hold for 4 more years. 91 points.

Lady VM's Roast Duck with Tete du Cuvee Champagne (South Haven, MI): Opened by VM with the cheese course. Notes of red currants, cherry, cooked cranberry and mint, with an herbal, earthy undertone. Medium-bodied and integrated, featuring flavors of currants, sour red berries, forest floor and herbs. Very nice. (91 pts.)

1998 Château Grand-Pontet

My last bottle. Decanted 2 hours before drinking. Moderate sediment. The cork came out in 2 pieces. Crimson color with little to no bricking. At 25 years old this wine was smooth and elegant. The tannins were well integrated. On the palate there were notes of charcoal, blackberries and leather. Drink now. 91 points.
