  • 1997 Château Latour - Pauillac, Médoc, Bordeaux, France (10/29/2004)
Ripe, round, roasted black fruit, huge, wailing notes of cassis with a hint of tobacco, lead pencil coming out now. The palate is muscular and a bit acidic a first, but as my palate adjusts this is becoming awfully nice and seamless. Sneaky tannins creeping in on the finish. This is a terrific wine to drink right now, especially on someone else's dime. (93 pts.)
  • 1997 Château Margaux - Margaux, Médoc, Bordeaux, France (10/29/2004)
Pretty notes of cedar and spice, with air some cassis comes out. The palate shows a lot of wood still, not terribly integrated, nice sweetness, but this is not terribly giving at this point. Very nice finish, lots of spiciness. Far less drinkable than the Latour. (92 pts.)
