1997 Chateau Montelena Saint Vincent - USA, California, Napa Valley (11/3/2006)

Haggis opened this at his home last week. This is a blend of Zinfandel, Primitivo and Sangiovese. 13.5% alcohol. This spends 12-16 months in oak. I think this is on the downhill side of its drinking window but still in that window. Smooth and not as fruity as you would expect from a Zin blend. Round finish. 88 points.

I agree this is just past peak. I liked this more than VM maybe because I, like the wine, am slightly over the hill. Quite fruity, with tannins soft and muted. The relatively low alchohol and good acidity have resulted in a wine that has aged well and should keep for another 3-5 yrs. I'll finish them up before then, I'm sure. 90pts.
