TN: 1996 Château Monbousquet

1996 Château Monbousquet - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru (6/29/2018)

I bought a few bottles of this at auction 3 years ago. This is the first one I've tried. 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Decanted 2 hours before drinking. Solid cork. Heavily sedimented. Brownish red color. Creamy texture. This wine opened up the more it aired out. Notes of asphalt, red berries and leather. This wine got deeper and longer as the night went on and just kept improving. 92 points

The last Monbousquet I had was the 05 and it was loaded with Brett. Just an absolutely brutal wine. Band aid and dirty socks all in one.

Haven't had the 2005 but have had the 1995, 1996 and 1998 and enjoyed all those bottles without any problems. The only Monbousquet that was off was the 2000 Blanc which I had a few times and always with the same flat and oxidized taste. I blame poor storage from my source for that.

3rd time I have had this wine. Took this bottle to Tosi's for our anniversary. Decanted 30 minutes before drinking. Heavy sediment. Leather aromas. Notes of dark cherries, tobacco and licorice. Restrained tannins. Fading. Drink now. 89 points.
