- 1985 Château Léoville Las Cases - St. Julien, Médoc, Bordeaux, France (10/30/2004)
We opened this for Steve's birthday dinner at Nell's. Great fill but not a great cork, wet to the top. (This was a recent acquisition from K&L.)
On initial pour this had an explosive nose, bursting with cassis, cedar and lead pencil. Gorgeous, ripe Cabernet! With time more mineral and charcoal notes start to emerge. As lovely as this was on a fresh pour, it did fade fairly quickly in the glass. On the palate this started out with a hint of astringency, but with an hour of air this integrated well, showing a soft, well-resolved texture. This lacks a bit of depth and structure, and some of that can be a bottle issue. Still, this was a lovely wine to sip throughout the evening and was Steve's introduction to Bordeaux. He seemed to enjoy it. (91 pts.)
