- 1983 Château La Croix - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol (1/5/2008)
Purchased from HDH in 2006 for $35. Had obviously leaked at some point. You could track the stain from the capsule all the way down to the label. The cork was completely purple and came out in two pieces. Fill was base neck. My expectations were not high. But sometimes things go your way. The wine gods were with us last night. This was a terrific little fully mature claret. Started out with some musty "grandma's basement" smells, but blew off into dill and tobacco. Pretty black currant fruit progressed toward a shy but silky finish. I was amazed at the level of fruit remaining in this wine, considering its outer condition. While clearly on the back nine of its life cycle, here's another '83 that is drinking great. Paired extremely well with "gigot de sept heures" (leg of lamb cooked slowly for seven hours in a Dutch oven - a Tony Bourdain recipe). My wife and I flipped a coin for the last pour, even though it was basically a mouthful of sediment.(92 pts.)
