Thought on making this site better

Now that the E-Bobbers are having a group hug (-1) over what can make the site better, I thought I'd start a thread for suggestions here.

Mine:

PM capabilities. I looked at my counts on E-Bob, and I have at least one PM for every two or three posts. It is a community-conenction builder that is pretty powerful and missing here.

I just would prefer to see greater participation by industry folks.
There are a lot of winemakers & growers over on eBob still that don't post here.

Most of the eBob defections seem to have gone to Wine Berzerkers. I find that amusing; that site has the same feel to it as WinoDepot did when it was new; the only real difference seems to be that Grapefulldead and Lou Briccant aren't there, and you're allowed to say spooge. I wish them luck, but wonder how long it'll last.

I don't think anything can or should be done. The forum is what it is; thankfully it has WS backing it, so is unlikely to simply disappear like WD did. The moderation is light touch, which is one reason why Robert has a relatively easy job really difficult job and what's more is ludicrously underpaid. Most board wars I've seen are exacerbated by excessive moderation.

So let's leave it the way it is; I for one would rather be on the '$15 Chardonnay' board than the '1928 Latour' board.
I'm relatively new to the site, having joined just shy of a year ago. Overall, it's been entertaining and informative to read everyone's posts. Members on this board seem to be, for the most part, respectful of each other. There's an element of class here that is very refreshing.

Most of the queries that I have posted have been answered with thoughtful and sincere responses.

Let's hope it continues.

One day, in the not so distant future, I might actually have something worthwhile to post!

There are times that the only thing I'd wish for is detentional hall for my favorite fellow forumite. But...then I think....where would we be without him roaming the halls? Wink I'm with the others...nothing really needed here. It's nice when the editors jump in, as well as industry folk. This is a great place for everyone to have a meeting of the minds when it comes to wine...as long as tolerance is kept in mind, we'll all do fine.

Yeah, PM or email would be awesome.
Avatars and jump to first unread would be good too.

However these probably all involve upgrading the software. The last major upgrade that I recall didn't go well, and it was when VinoCellar upgraded its software that the rot set in; the board was never the same afterwards.
Oh yeah. Charge anyone from Canada $100 US for posting privileges for each year.

Except for Seaquam.

PM would be nice. Don't think avatars or graemlins are in the works. Thank me, it was my pissing squirrel that got them yanked several years ago. I did promise not to post them anymore.
Mr. Meyerson was not amused.......... Popcorn
Make changes to buying and selling, make it like ebob where only thread started can post to thread, woill prevent a lot clean up worked needed by Mr. Tylor.
Add pm or at least email functionality if possible
And DoubleD's suggestion of time travel for 1st growths is pretty sweet as well.
What would make this board better? That’s simple, more participation. More members with more varied experiences and opinions would result in a livelier, more active board. How to accomplish this goal? Well that’s the hard part. I submit that the first step in that direction would be more civility. A friendlier, more open board would encourage the lurkers to join in. That will require two things; better behavior by present forumites, and a stronger presence by Robert Taylor when the first doesn’t happen. Now I am not by any means suggesting a Squire’s style repressive regime, rather a quick and direct rebuke of those who can’t seem to play nice. Having different opinions are expected, not respecting one another’s is unexceptable. The amount of rude, condescending and plain obnoxious replies is unwarranted, and tiring. I bet that I am not the only one who when seeing certain names as last posted wonder what trouble they are now causing. I know that there are times that I am loath to respond to a thread, as I know it will just be a waste of my time since the board trolls are in full voice.

It is just so frustrating that Wine Spectator seems not to care that their face to the world on the Internet is polluted with such disrespectful drivel. If you were a lurker and were thinking of coming aboard, would this type of behavior encourage you to do so? It’s well past time that a few people get there posting rights temporarily suspended if they don’t clean up there acts, no matter how many posts they may have. If such behavior continues on return, it’s time to ban them. Worked for Serge didn’t it?

As a lurker who joined recently, I must say I'm not seeing the negative drivel that you're describing. Yes, there are the occasional obnoxious posts, but overall I'm seeing thoughtful, sincere responses and good natured interactions. I wouldn't have joined otherwise!
