I'm scheduled to have my house tented and fumigated for termites next week. I think the wine is sealed and safe behind the foil and cork; my wife wants it all removed from the cellar to off site storage. While I'm tempted by her threat not to drink any wine that stays here unprotected, I'd like to know what others think.

Safe, or not? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Thanks to all for the advice:

sade58 - the whole house gets tented, but the wine is in a temp controlled cellar.

TORB - good advice; I'll kill two birds with one stone and offer to bag up the swill for her

haggis - very good link and very helpful

So far, the clear consensus is not to take any special action. I agree, but still trying to convince my wife. After 20 years of marriage, she's suspicious and I may need more to justify my laziness. Any other compelling reasons?

This may help. If there are even two termites already in the corks, and of course that's a possibility, then by removing the wine you are defeating the purpose of the fumigation.

cbb: what you might do is unplug your units for the 24 hr that tenting takes. The volume of liquid in the bottles should be sufficient to keep the temperature reasonable. This will reduce (or eliminate) the units drawing external air into the cabinet. Then, tape around the doors. That should do it.

Ric: not sure it you were joking...but cork contains suberin which seems to discourage termites (and some other vermin). Suberin is actually a pretty decent repellent.
I've never had a house tented.

What are the procedures for removing or cleaning things like clothes, toiletries, dishes, cooking utensils, etc...?

If it were me (and depending on the value and extent of the wine collection), I would be sorely tempted to put the wines into a storage facility just to be safe.
Just curious - how did you notice the termites and what is the extent of the damage? It's something that I'm afraid of in my own house - they invaded before I bought it and there seems to have been a treatment about 14 years ago. We check yearly for further signs and I know I've got them in the back yard.

So you could wrap the bottles in plastic bags, if you didn't want to cart them to an off-site storage place.

Yup. Or, if one is comfortable with unplugging the units for 48hr (to prevent gas from being circulated into the unit), simply wrap the whole thing in bubble wrap or heavy plastic.
