Tahoma 4.0

Tahoma 4.0 was an annual gathering of friends started by tpewinedrinker in 2014 whom he met primarily through the Wine Spectator forums.  In its fourth year, the group decided to change the venue to Sonoma County in a beautiful home albeit one with no A/C.

The usual forumites were in – TPEwinedrinker, DoubleD, sarbuze, thirsty man, vinolocity, EB56, TDub, Gigabit, Shane T, patespo, pauljr1121, winedrmike, xhoser, AMac, SD-Wineaux, bomba, Ben H, Anthony, Bill, Form49B, danyull, and g-man.  2018 was made special by the attendance of jorgerunfast and jburman with guest appearances from the winemakers of Macdonald, Blankiet, and Ovid.

As in every year, the wines were always secondary to the camaraderie, storytelling, and ball-busting shared by all.

I can’t believe DOubleD posted this lineup 16 hours ago and not a single comment- just crickets. I guess the forum really is dead

Ok- I’ll start it off.   Incredible lineup of newer and much older wines. Really hard to pick a favorite.

Standouts for me included:

2004 Schraeder old sparky mag

2007 Araujo Eisele

1992 Beringer private reserve mag

1978 Montrose

1978 duckhorn merlot 3 palms

1978 DC RRT- I liked it more than the Gravelly but I’m in the minority here

1990 jaboulet La Chapelle

1934 Clos de la Roche- really enjoyable and unexpected from an 84 year old wine

2011 MacDonald- could be the wine of the vintage

we all disagreed on our favorites but were in unanimous agreement on one thing- this new WS format blows

We're just unsure how to react to a list of wines that should be in "what are you drinking" rather than "Tasting Notes".

The asterisk after the wine means that it was a single bottle.

My Top 10 FWIW included the ‘04 Schrader Sparky, ‘03 Juge, ‘90 Jaboulet, ‘02 Louis Latour Corton-Charlemagne, '11 Macdonald, ‘96 Mouline, ‘93 Grange, ‘91 Togni.

Some of the wines that were opened late Thurs night suffered from palate fatigue and/or warm serving temps.

Just trying to give the Tasting Notes section a little love.

DD, thanks again for taking notes.  The Andremily was actually the Mouvedre, not Grenache.  Also, you missed my favorite wine of the weekend, which was the '78 Diamond Creek Gravelly Meadow, right before the RRT.

Some of us gathered Wednesday as well, and two of the wine we had that make my Top 10 of the weekend were the '94 Chateau Rayas Fonsalette and '02 Masseto.

Top 10:

'78 DC Gravelly Meadow was my top

'78 DC Red Rock Terrace

'03 Marcel Juge Cornas

'94 Chateau Rayas Fonsalette

'02 Masseto

'92 Dunn Petite Sirah

2011 MacDonald

'93 Grange

'96 Mondavi I Block Fume Blanc

Selosse VO Extra Brut

The LaLa flight on the last night while playing poker was hedonistic and amazing.

As always, the friendships, comradery, ball busting, all outweighed the wines.

Wine of the weekend for me was the '05 P-J Belle Epoque Rose. Honorable mentions lagging behind this incredible wine were:

'97 E. Guigal La Turque
'78 Diamond Creek RRT
'92 Dunn Vineyards Petite Sirah Howell Mountain
'04 Schrader "Old Sparky"
'90 Jaboulet La Chapelle
'03 Juge Cornas
'93 Penfolds Grange
'76 Heitz Martha's Vineyard
'11 MacDonald
'06 d'Yquem

And a special mention for 2 wines that were a treat to taste and would've been at the top of most events:

'34 Des Vieux Chais Maconnais Clos de la Roche
'78 Petrus

Thanks everyone for all the great wines and food!  My top wines (in rough order of drinking only) were 78 Petrus, 78 Gravelly Meadow, 78 Heinz Martha’s, 15 MacDonald, 14 Opus, 78 Remoissenet Chambolle, 78 Montrose, and 73 Guigal Cote Rotie (which buried all the LaLas for my taste).  I’m sure I’m missing some.

Here is my favorite vine (1888 planting from Bedrock Vineyard?):

Once again an amazing weekend with incredible wines and an even better group of guys. Each year it gets tougher to hang in with these young hooligans and my strategy of taking small pours has become a survival instinct. We go through the wines so quickly it is often a challenge to pick favorites or write notes with so many great wines but some do seem to stand out in each of our memory banks. These stand out in mine

Night 1

2012 Aubert Lauren Sonoma Coast Chardonnay (my favorite domestic chard it paired well with the seafood extravaganza)

2002 Louis Latour Corton-Charlemagne 3L (also paired well with the seafood extravaganza)

1934 Vieux Chais Maconnais Clos de la Roche Grand Vin de Bourgogne (memorable for being alive and well)

1992 Dunn Vineyards Petit Sirah (such a unique wine. I dont usually care for PS but this drinks beautifully)

2004 Schrader Old Sparky (Magnum) a beautiful wine and great expression of To Kalon

Night 2

1978 Petrus - truly memorable and grateful for the opportunity to drink this iconic wine. Thx TPE

1978 Diamond Creek Gravelly Meadow - the older DC always seem to stand out in a crowd. Would love to add some to the cellar as they like Dunn HM never seem to disappoint

1963 Sebastiani Cabernet Sauvignon North Coast - who knew something my age from Napa could still be alive - Thx PS!

1996 Robert Mondavi To Kalon I Block Fume Blanc - just a wow wine unknown to most of even the most avid wine drinkers. Never had such a complex white wine from CA let alone anything close to this old. Thx to AM for smuggling it out of the Mondavi cellars

2007 Araujo Eisele Vineyard - BOOM! Araujo Eisle always seems to be in WOTN conversation every time I have it.

1991 Philip Togni Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon - a mere lad, wish I had this 10 to 20 years in the future. Its built to last

2011 Macdonald - always a treat these have quickly become my favorite Napa Cabs once they get some age on them

2006 D'Yquem - just love the bountiful aromatics this wine always shares with me

 Night 3

2003 Juge Cornas Magnum - first time drinking this I get the hype.

1997 Altesino Montosoli Brunello Magnum - what aged BDM should be. Just hitting its stride with life ahead

1996 Guigal La Mouline - a treat to drink all the La La's side by side the La M stood out for me closely followed by the La T.

Probably not a surprise that the list was shorter on day 3 as pallet fatigue was setting in.

In addition to all the wines above we consumed at least a case at each of the tastings. I dont have a list from the Bedrock tasting but at Martinelli the tasting included

2007 Three Sisters Chardonnay

2014 Three Sisters Chardonnay

2004 Bondi Home Ranch Pinot Noir

2016 Moonshine ranch Pinot Noir

1999 Jackass Vineyard Zinfandel

2016 Giuseppe & Luisa Zinfandel

2016 Jackass Hill Zinfandel

Lastly a big shout out to Sarbuze, Danyull, Thirsty Man, Double D, Gigabit and the good people at Round Table Pizza for ensuring we ate like kings all weekend!
