I do realize I am asking a rather vague question here but nonetheless...

Friends of my wife and I are getting married and we are giving them a set of Riedel Sommelier Burgundy Grand Cru glasses, a nice bottle opener and are looking for a bottle to accompany the "set". We can't really get a bottle from the 2007 vintage just yet... so, wanting to stick with a year of significance for them... we have 2000 and 2003. Other than knowing they like wine and that they enjoyed an '04 Schild Shiraz we gave them I don't really know their tastes.

So we are asking for suggestions from 2000 and/or 2003. A nice brunnello in there somewhere? A pinot noir?

I am paging thru the WS ratings for surrounding years to see if anything jumps off the page at me, but looking for a little advice here..

Not looking to break the bank unecessarily here either and also cannot be impossible to find Wink

Thanks for all suggestions!

You and me both. Seriously, he did say it had to be something easy to find. 2000 Baroli fit that much better than any mailing list Cali pinot. How about a Clerico Per Cristina, or for half as much the Pajana. Also all three Baroli from Rocche dei Manzoni are available for around $60.
For drinking now, I have found a number of VERY GOOD 2000 Brunellos. The vintage is not a highly sought after vintage for Brunello, wines seem to be more elegant and feminine but they are drinking very well and are affordable. Try winesearcher.com to find a retailer in your area. I have enjoyed both Casanova di Neri and Piccolomini Ciacci which are generally easier to find.

2003 Brunello is bottled but not yet released and won't be approachable for some time. 2003 Rosso's however are drinking very well and are affordable.

Bordeaux 2000 is excellent but you will pay for it and the best are not really at peak yet.

Hope this helps.
KSC02 perhaps you could lend your experiance and provide a suggestion that fits within the original posters guidelines.

In my opinion, New World Pinot does not even come CLOSE to Burgundy but that also does not help the original poster find a 2000 or 2003 value wine (Brunello, Pinot specified) that is somewhat easy to find.
Agree with others about the Burg stems. Italian nebbiolo from 2000 would be my suggestion. There are tons of affordable wines from that vintage that should be easily found.

Although I have yet to open one of mine, the 2000 Bruno Rocca Barbaresco Rabaja is available for under $100, and tasters who I know and respect say the wine is stunning and drinking well now.

Considering the STEMS indicated, Brunello OR Rosso are completely off track and outside the posters guidelines altogether.

Personally, at this point, I've no better suggestions than those given by VT2IT & PH.
How about a 2000 Ginestra, Vigna Casa Maté Barolo. I see a couple available for $75 @ HDH,Chicago.

Why would you give them glass A and wine B.

It seems you have alredy chose the glasses, why not give them the matching wine, a FRENCH Burgundy Grand Cru.

I also do not understand. It would have been so easy to have the glasses and the wine be in line with each other. Oh well....
