I was just given a bottle of 1975 I.L.Ruffino del Magnifico. A neighbor knows I like wine and said that his dad has had this in a closet for "years" but does not drink wine. Should I expect anything more than vinegar?

I wouldn't open it. I'd just use it as a display because it is from 1975.
Just etch the initials "Th.J" on the bottle, and scratch out part of the "9" in the date to make it look like a "7" instead.
Then auction it off at Sothebys for a cool million.

Considering it was a gift, I think you are obligated to at least open it and give it a sniff. Anything else would be rude IMO.
Well 1975 was a strongish vintage (Parker gave it an 85) for Tuscany.
Ruffino is a huge producer whose ordinary wine is pretty average but whose tops wines can often be quite smart. And as they were one of the first commercially driven houses to turn from producing bulk crap and focus on producing individual wines from the region that bodes well.
I would give it ago. I have never heard of the Magnifico label- it may have some special commemorative value and consequently may be a special bottling.
