In Baltimore, and perhaps in PH's county, you can't buy alcohol in a restaurant until the polls close at 8.
Apparently the laws have changed. Talbot County seems to be the only county to bar alcohol sales during polling hours, but this appears to be for "carry-out," only. Interestingly, the city of Annapolis was miraculously left off the list of allowed jurisdictions until 2015.

Soon to be a meme.

I stand corrected. You can hand out all the alcohol you want!
A client of mine owns a noted restaurant in Baltimore. They are closed on Tuesdays. I asked him why. He said, "Two reasons. Everyone else is closed on Mondays. Second, we don't serve alcohol on election day, which falls on Tuesdays." That was, however, a conversation from a long time ago.

We were living in Costa Rica in the late 80s during an election there. Grocery stores selling alcohol had purpose-built wooden structures that fit perfectly into the alcove of the store which held the alcohol, blocking it off on election day. It was then not only locked in place by a couple of big heavy locks but the election authorities put purpose-made tape with their names on it over the locks and the wooden structure.
Knowing the Costa Ricans I expect they still do this all across the country.
No alcohol sold until polls close in Mexico, also. I had the unfortunate coincidence of vacationing there during an election once.

For the attorneys on the board (anyone can answer really...just thought I would start there)...how many agreed with Alan Dershowitz in his argument tonight (if you watched)?
i certainly did...and even the point if it was taking place on the other side....I think I would agree as well (if this were happening to Obama). It wouldn’t though, as republicans aren’t as big a group of A-holes as the dems are.

Nice job catching your own hypocrisy. Like your President, you have to be the dumbest person in any room you walk into. Do you remember whining about the “intolerant left” a few weeks ago? Clown.

Well considering the only legal support he relied on to make his argument - an article by Harvard professor Nikolas Bowie (who every other legal scholar disagrees with any way) has written an op ed - that says Dershowitz is dead wrong - I would say that no - I do not agree with his argument - and he would argue the earth is flat if he was paid enough or it got him on TV
It will be quite interesting if Bernie wins Iowa. And what will be the reaction by the Dem establishment and the other candidates if that happens?

It makes sense that he would defend Trump, given his track record of former clients (OJ, Epstein, etc). Sold his soul for the almighty dollar long ago.

As awful a candidate as is he's not a racist, a bigot, or a sexist. He's not an anti-Semite. Also not a know-nothing and probably would not be a demagogue. So who exactly do you think we would vote for?

Agreed. That said, Iowa is just a little better than a 50% predictor of the eventual Dem candidate. If he wins, or is even in the top 2-3, expect concerted attacks on Bernie from all sides, except the organgutan. I'm not saying that Bernie couldn't beat him, but he's last on my list on policy and electability.

I agree with his earlier assessment.
On the question of calling witnesses or not....... What happens if there is a vote on calling witnesses, like Bolton, and the vote is 50-50? Does the Chief Justice break the tie?
On Dershowitz: He's very bright and speaks well, and speaks forcefully. But speaking loudly and forcefully doesn't mean you are right. As to what the Founders intended.... who knows? It would be nice if the Republicans would come out and say, "The President, by requesting aid in our electoral process for his own benefit from the Ukrainians, did something wrong. But, we don't think it is an impeachable offense." But, they lack the backbone to even say that the President was wrong to do this with Ukraine. Why? Because most of them are concerned mostly about their own re-election prospects and continuing in the positions of power than they have achieved. Romney, who is wealthy and doesn't need the Senate position, but is beloved in Utah and will keep it as long as he wants, is free to say what he really thinks. So is Lamar Alexander, who is leaving office. Murkowski is pretty popular in Alaska, and Alaskans are pretty independent.
A copy of Profiles in Courage should be placed on each Senator's desk.
My guess is the Republicans will require testimony from the Bidens and Schiff if the Dems want Bolton to testify. They may also want the testimony of the ICAG to be made public also.

But you can take an educated guess, no? It's really not too tough of a choice except for some here.

Yes, we all know they want immaterial witnesses.

Trump beats Bernie far worse than Clinton.

Well... the Federalist Papers, and hundreds of writings by many of them. It's not too hard to guess how they'd feel about a president who bribes a foreign country to help him/her cheat in an election.

According to current Senate rules, there is no provision for a tiebreaker. A tie is counted as a "no" vote. There is a precedent for the Chief Justice to cast tie breaking votes. The only time it occurred was in Andrew Johnson's impeachment. The more I read about that impeachment, the more I shake my head. There was a lot of sleazy stuff going on. Imagine that.

The Chief Justice would actually cast a vote? That is, frankly, shocking to me.
I'm no expert, but I always thought that the process for breaking a tie in the senate was for the VP to cast a vote. Given that he or she has a vested interest in the outcome of the trial though, I could see why that wouldn't happen during impeachment.

I think that Biden should take them up on it. He's already seeing increases in poll results based on the additional attention he's getting from this red herring. They've got nothing on the guy related to this impeachment. Hunter? He's totally immaterial to this trial. I think that the Bidens made grave errors in judgement regarding junior's Burisma entanglement, but nobody has found a single thing that either of them did that was illegal.
PH
“If a president does something which he believes will help him get elected in the public interest, that cannot be the kind of quid pro quo that results in impeachment,” Dershowitz said.
So, if Trump were to frame his political opponent for murder, or fake a video that showed him to be a child molester, or have someone on his staff make a false accusation of sexual assault against his opponent, that's just fine because Trump believes his re-election is in the public interest. And that concept would apply to any politician, since no doubt they all believe their election is in the public interest.
I don't suppose any lawyers here were taught by Dershowitz, were they? If so, have you any thoughts on his views?
I certainly wasn't taught by Dershowitz. Suppose the President commits treason in order to get reelected?
