Currant, licorice and raisin on the nose. Cherry and vanilla notes. Smooth integrated tannins and long lingering finish. Full body and wonderful mouth feel. Delicious. 94 points.
Too ripe for my tastes. I had this at the Taste of Oakville 2 yrs ago and was one of, if not the best wine at the show. Very strong showing that had no sense of over ripe fruit which is why I boutght 3 btls without tasting after bottling. Had it out of bottle at the last Taste of Oakville and was one of my least favorites. I found new homes for all but 1 which I will taste again in about 5 more years.
Poured it straight from the bottle without decanting. The color was deep garnet with purple highlights. The aroma was earthy with a little whiff of alcohol. Full bodied with chocolate and currant flavors. Well balanced with tannins already integrating. The finish lasted about 30 seconds. I had the 2002 Neal Family Cab and the 2001 Lewelling Cab last week and this reminded me more of the Lewelling, although this is more full-bodied. 94 points.
Benchland, since you felt this was too ripe for your taste, what are some telltale characteristics of over-ripeness?
