Good to hear about Homeland Sunny.  Saving the episodes for binge watching.

Watched Counterpart again (Seasons 1 and 2) which is now available on Amazon Prime.  Great cast.  Great series.  However There will not be a Season 3 if I remember correctly.

Best place to check for that kind of info: epguides.com

http://epguides.com/Counterpart/

You'll see at the top of the page that it's cancelled/ended.

Speaking of things I like, I'm really digging Agatha's Christie's Poirot originally from the BBC. I originally watch the first couple seasons of this when they were shown on PBS in the early 90s. However, I just couldn't get into them and dropped out. Now upon watching them again I see they are just little gems with great characterizations, locations and attention to detail. They also do something that's hard to pull off: they go far from the words of the books and yet more than keep the spirit.

David Suchot pulled off the incredible feat of performing as Hercule Poirot in adaptions of all 70 Christie short stories and novels. The includes the final Poirot book that published during her life. The book Curtain, however had actually been written 30 years earlier. She originally planned to have it published posthumously as her detective's swansong. She changed her mind and released it a year before she died.

Another reason this show is so good is the budget was always kept at a solid level and that they are only making on average only six episodes a year. A reason why Columbo is so good compared to so much episodic television is it began as a rotation show on NBC's Mystery Movie. Unlike equivalent shows of the time like I Spy and Mission Impossible which cranked out at least 26 one-hour shows a season, Columbo only averaged six 90-minutes shows.

Finished The Outsider, produced by Jason Bateman who also acts in it and directed some episodes. It's funny my daughter's boyfriend mentioned it went a little off track in starting in episode four. This is because it's when the Stephen King's (It's adapted from his book) influence rears its banal head. However it's perhaps some the best acting I've seen in a mini-series in some time. A really fantastic cast make this worth finishing.

Side technical note: I've have never seen a TV show, or movie, shot with such constantly shallow depth of field. It has a purpose, and it sometimes too much, but it is interesting.

Recommended.

Portrait Artist of the Year

A friend told me about this Brit SkyArts series. We’ve watched both the 2018 and 2019 editions.

The current season can be found on YouTube (search for “Portrait Artist of the year 2020”) where someone is posting each episode the morning after it airs in the UK. Two episodes to go in the current season.

Simple premise: in each episode 9 artists - some pros, some amateur - have 4 hours to paint a portrait of a celebrity sitter. Three judges then pick one artist to go on to the semi-finals. The ninth episode is the semi-final (with 8 artists), followed by the finals (with 3 artists). The winner receives a £10,000 commission to paint a celebrity portrait (the process of which is shown in episode 11). This season it will be Nile Rogers, and the portrait will hang in the Royal Albert Hall.

its a simple premise but it’s hugely compelling to see all the different approaches to portrait painting.

Started Hunters on Amazon Prime.  It’s been great so far.  I was skeptical of Pacino, but he’s done a good job.  Nice to see Josh Radnor (How I Met Your Mother).  Some fresh faces like Jerrika Hinton and others.

Finished Season 1.  I thought it was great except for the conclusion.

I just finished Hunters.  I agree completely with you Dom.  The conclusion was meh. But I enjoyed it up till then.

Great minds...

I just finished and agree about the conclusion. I also thought the intertwining of exploration-style filmmaking and the Holocaust sometimes didn’t work because all of the Holocaust stories were quite realistic as to what actually happened so there is a sense of almost downplaying that I felt, though obviously that was completely unintentional. That said, it was quite well acted. I thought Pacino was great.

Except for the made up chess game. The creator's excuse is laughable.

I often wondered which of the atrocities or portrayals of the Nazi concentration camps were true and which weren't.  It's too bad they had to make one up.

Looking forward to season 3 of Fauda on Netflix.

I loved the first two seasons of this series.  Very happy to know that season 3 is coming soon. As someone who is a friend of several Israelis and Palestinians,  I can recommend the first 2 seasons without hesitation.  Reasonably balanced, and very well done.  Hope season 3 is equally balanced and entertaining.

ESPN has announced that their series “The Last Dance”, chronicling the final year of the Michael Jordan/Bulls dynasty will start airing in April as opposed to June, the original plan. Looking forward to this greatly.

The best brag I have is unfortunately not about myself. My best friend wrote Space Jam. When the two of us were in NY, in 2005, for Cream's final appearances we ran into the music producer for the movie. He said they really should do a sequel. 16 years later it's coming out with LeBron James in 2021. Neither of them had anything to do with Space Jam II.  That's show biz.

Watched the first season of Luther over the past few nights. A couple of episodes were a little over the top with the gore factor, but overall I like it. Episode 5 (and 6) was the stand-out.

Watched season 4 last night, all two episodes. Serious drop in quality from the first three seasons so we're done with it and will probably move on to Ozark.
