Unfortunately, if WS were to provide this service, they could be liable for any harm done through it. Unlikely as it may seem, if for example harrassment or threats were conveyed throught the personal messages, the carrier-- WS in this case-- would have some legal exposure. That's why they would need to read and sometimes moderate the messages.

I don't care one way or another about this matter, but I think folks ought to be aware that the messages aren't really "private" in the usual sense of the term before they cast a vote here.

I use the PM feature on other sites, but still prefer good ol' e-mail or telephone for real conversation.

As always, reasonable. Logical. <sigh>. However, I'd now like to change my answer in another thread. Namely, "Which forumite would you most like to have a drink with?". Strike "Seaquam", add "Grunhauser". Big Grin Hey, we're nothing if not capricious, eh? (Not that my aforementioned beloved will lose sleep over the change.) Wink Smile

Liability. Schmiability. Wink And, yeah, PM's would be about as private as one's work email.

What I like about the feature is that before one coughs up one's email, he or she has had a chance to interact, at least a bit, with someone. Gives one a smidge of a chance to decide whether or not to pass along your email to that person. A non-issue most of the time as people in the "community" will help out by "vouching" for one another. But, it could be useful in the buying and selling area...

The problem with passing your email to someone on this forum is that you pass it on to all the random nuts that frequent the place. Cool

Email addresses are not private and it's a fairly simple thing to find out who and where someone is with it.

I would never post my email address on this or any other internet site.

Probably true on a real name site but on a site of alias' I do not think the same would apply.
