We did our Piedmont wine offline last night to great success. OK, as is our habit we start with appetizers and sparkling wines and passed on Piedmont sparklings and did two Champagnes. Otherwise, we did Piedmont. With the listed whites one of the members did a great minestrone soup with a pan seared cod filet. For the main course, we provided lamb shanks, osso bucco style, with polenta.
Bubblies - Perrier Joulet Grand Brut, Collet Millesime 2008
I hadn't had the 2008 Collet before, only having their Art Deco previously, and it was outstanding. Very lively with pleasant citrus flavors. I had picked this wine up at their winery in Ay this past summer, and it was definitely a treat.
Whites - 2020 Abbona Gavi, 2020 Family Lanzavecchia Roero Arneis
The Gavi was pears and more pears with very bright acidity that went well with the soup and fish. The Arneis was particularily great. An intense minerality that was matched with ocean spray background with pleasant apricot notes. A full mouthfeel to this wine as it coated the mouth.
1st Flight of Reds; 2004 Rizzi Barbaresco Pajore; 2001 Sandrone Cannubi Boschis Barolo
We choose to do the two older wines in the first flight and the younger ones in the second. The Sandrone was everyone's WOTN. This 20 year old wine drank like a baby, even after 2 hours of decant. Tar, bacon fat, leather, and currant filled the glass. The Rizzi was impeccable and far more velvety than its still brutish cousin. The King and Queen of wines both showed their prowess in these wines. Both wines would have years of cellar time left in them, especially the Barolo. I'd give the Barolo a 95 and the Rizzi a 93.
2nd Flight of Reds; 2016 Bruno Rocco Bararesco Rabaja; 2013 Pio Cesare Barolo
What a difference a decade plus makes!! These wines both had 3-4 hours of decant and still tannin laded. Definitely infantcide, but made for interesting comparisons to the older lines in the first flight. The Barbe still smoother and velvety compared to the Barolo. My favorite of these two was the Bruno Rocco that showed it fruit a bit more energically, but I'll pass on giving either a rating because I believe they were both drank too young. I believe the Barbaresco has a lot of potential, and in a decade may well be a 93-94 pointer. The Pio Cesare is probably in the lower range of that. I typically don't drink either of these wines younger that 10 years old, but it was still a great exercise and the lamb shanks definitely paired well with all four and helped soothe the tannins in the latter two.
